The hardest part of a Highlands day is knowing when not to drive in.

Four Highlands days, four different access problems

“The Highlands” is too broad to answer a transport question. The table below matches the place and access method to the failure point most likely to spoil the day. It is a planning aid, not permission to drive a road.

For 2026, Landmannalaugar also has a parking clock

FÍ’s summer 2026 information says the Highlands bus service starts on June 12. Drivers entering Landmannalaugar must reserve parking between 09:00 and 16:00, with a separate day-service fee. That changes the morning you can build: the bus timetable, the parking window and the time needed to walk all compete for the same daylight. FÍ also gives the average season when Landmannalaugar is usually accessible as roughly late June to mid-September. An average is not a guarantee. On July 2, 2026, FÍ announced that the northern F208 approach from Sigalda had only just opened. This neatly illustrates why “June has arrived” and “your chosen approach is open today” are different questions. Þórsmörk needs its own transport decision

Þórsmörk becomes especially tempting on a South Coast itinerary. Turning inland near the waterfalls can make it look like one more side road. FÍ's guidance for Langidalur is clear, however: it recommends the bus because the river crossings are difficult, while crossing them independently requires an experienced driver. This does not make Þórsmörk a forbidding destination. It means taking it out of the “we have time left on the South Coast” category and giving it an independent day with its own return journey, walking time and transport choice. You do not need to force a river crossing just because the rental car is sitting outside. A bus or guided trip lets you spend the day watching the valley weather and keeping the return leg intact. If tomorrow starts with a flight, car return or fixed check-in, use the accommodation-night plan to decide whether this is the right day for the Highlands at all.

A day visit, a hut night and Laugavegur are separate plans

Landmannalaugar is also the starting point of the Laugavegur, so search results often blur day tours, short walks and multi-day hikes. FÍ notes that access to the trail changes each year with the opening of F208, F225 and F210, along with the weather and snow cover. The average opening period for the complete Laugavegur is approximately June 25 to September 15. This should not be read as a promise that you can begin walking on every day within those dates. It is a reminder that anyone planning an overnight route must first arrange huts or campsites, transport and the return journey. Arriving by day bus or taking an 11-hour tour does not automatically turn that day into the first stage of a multi-day trek.

A smaller but useful detail is FÍ's warning that phone reception can be unreliable on Highlands trails and huts may not have Wi-Fi. For visitors staying only a few hours, that means saving return tickets, offline maps and the group's meeting arrangements while still in the lowlands. For overnight hikers, it means choosing an altogether more demanding type of itinerary rather than casually extending a day trip.

The cost of a Highlands self-drive goes beyond renting a larger car

Within the same trip, a higher vehicle price, potentially different insurance exclusions, a full day of demanding driving and the following night's transfer all belong in the calculation. Before leaving the lowlands, you need four answers on your phone—not ten travel guides

1. Road: open Umferðin and check today's status for the specific F-road, not its average summer opening period.
2. Destination: northern F208, F225, southern F208 and F249 are not interchangeable names. Write the destination and its approach road on the same line.
3. Contract and vehicle: read the F-road and river-crossing terms for your rental company and your exact vehicle model. Ask for written confirmation if anything is unclear.
4. Return: confirm the last bus or tour departure, tonight's check-in and the first commitment tomorrow morning that you cannot miss. Only when all four answers are in place is it worth opening the navigation app.
