Separate the two kinds of self-drive

The value of a day tour is not that you can ignore the map. It is that transport and the Highland access window are handled as one designed outing. You still need to confirm the meeting city, total duration, walking distance, whether an internal valley transfer is included, and what happens if the activity is cancelled. When you have only one Highland day, a fixed meeting plan protects accommodation and dinner better than finding the route at short notice. If you are staying in Hella or Hvolsvöllur, put the early departure and the vehicle return time after the trip on the same schedule.

Which night should hold Kerlingarfjöll?
Do not put the Highland day between two long-distance stays that cannot be cancelled. On a South Coast route, Hella or Hvolsvöllur can provide a lowland buffer, leaving a museum, pool or waterfall day available if the road is closed. On a Ring Road itinerary, first check that you have enough nights: going up from the south and then continuing north is not a free extra attraction. If the Golden Circle is already on your plan, Gullfoss helps with orientation, but do not assume both destinations fit into one afternoon.
Once you have chosen a day tour, the accommodation decision comes after the activity page: a meeting point in Reykjavík, Hella or another lowland town changes both the previous night's bed and dinner after the return. With self-drive, secure cancellable lowland accommodation first, then decide whether to continue into the Highlands once you know the road status.
