If the evening needs to cover groceries, fuel, a pharmacy, a clinic, dinner, the public pool or a simple walk, Hvolsvöllur is more dependable than an isolated property whose name merely appears farther east on the map.
The N1 station and road signs in the photograph explain the town's role better than a polished mountain view would. What you gain here is somewhere to park, replenish your supplies and then decide which branch road to take in the morning. You do not gain a magical midpoint that automatically shortens every South Coast drive.

It works when wind and rain intervene, someone in the group needs a rest, or you do not want to surrender another full day to the car. Saga Centre sets local history in the context of Njáls saga. Both are compact exhibitions with a clear purpose; neither needs to be forced into an already long waterfall day simply to increase the attraction count.
The public pool offers a different kind of plan. The current facilities include a 25-metre outdoor pool, a children's pool, a waterslide, two hot tubs and a sauna; opening hours and rental rules still need to be checked on the current municipal page. If you have already spent hours in the car, finishing the day with thirty minutes to an hour here may do more for a normal start tomorrow than adding another supposedly convenient waterfall. That is especially true for families with children: the waterslide is not a famous name on an attraction list, but it may be the one stop nobody argues about.

Hvolsvöllur can shorten the first driving section if that commitment is Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss or the western South Coast. If it is an ice-cave tour from Vík, Reynisfjara or Jökulsárlón, move the bed east; otherwise, you are simply saving the long drive for the hours before the activity.
