This is not a hotel-star comparison. Hotel Rangá's room pages list options from 18m² to 70m² for up to two to four guests, along with three outdoor hot pools, an observatory, telescopes, a restaurant and an aurora wake-up service. Hotel Hvolsvollur's official pages present a restaurant, bar, hot tub, luggage storage and tourist information for an evening in a service town. Both are useful, but they offer different kinds of convenience.

One Route 1, two completely different evenings
These scores reflect what you need the evening to accomplish, not hotel star ratings. Rangá's facilities and Hvolsvollur's town-based fallback serve different purposes.
The two hotels serve noticeably different purposes. Decide whether you want to remain at the property or handle town-based tasks.
Dinner, hot pools and stargazing are concentrated on site. If you arrive only to sleep for a few hours, the facilities may not earn back the premium.
Fuel, supplies, the LAVA Centre and public facilities give the route more room to adapt.
Hvolsvollur works better for getting organised beforehand, although the actual meeting time and road conditions still need to come from the operator.
Rangá lets you stay at the property, while Hvolsvollur offers indoor alternatives in town. Their fallback options are different.
Neither hotel is Vík. If the eastern section is a fixed objective, compare Vík separately.

The actual location is more likely to mislead you than the hotel name.
Hotel Rangá sits in a rural position along Suðurlandsvegur near Hella, while Hotel Hvolsvollur is within the Hvolsvöllur service area. On a map, the distance looks modest. Once you arrive, the evening works differently: the first means “you do not need to go out again,” while the second means “if you go out, there are still useful things to do.” The fixed ferry timing at Landeyjahöfn, the eastbound direction towards Vík and the conditions for departing towards the Highlands do not disappear simply because you stay between them.
What should the rate difference buy you?
If Rangá's premium buys three outdoor hot pools, an observatory, a restaurant and an evening without searching for dinner, it has a clear purpose for guests who expect to stay on site. For people leaving early and using the room only for a few hours, those facilities may go unused. Hvolsvollur's value is not necessarily a view. It is the ability to deal with wet clothes, low fuel, a postponed activity or the need for an indoor fallback while the town still gives you something useful to do. Those two kinds of value cannot be reduced to a difference in hotel rating.

Signals that can reverse the comparison
Do not transfer one hotel's strengths to the other.
- If the pool or spa affects your choice, check its opening hours and facility access for your stay dates.
- If quiet matters, request a room away from the corridor or street and confirm whether the property can accommodate that request.
- Hvolsvollur's town convenience does not mean it is close to Vík or any particular Highland meeting point. Work backwards from the confirmation details.

The easiest costs to underestimate are not the distances on the map but the small jobs still waiting after arrival. Rangá keeps dinner and stargazing within a rural property; Hvolsvollur makes it easier to combine supplies, the exhibition centre and public facilities along one town route. Who should not force a choice between these two?
These hotels suit two different jobs in the western South Coast. If your route points elsewhere, even a careful comparison table cannot rescue the morning.
- Meeting in Vík or at an ice-cave departure tomorrow: Add accommodation in Vík as a third option. Do not replace the meeting address with “somewhere in the middle of the South Coast.”
- Catching an early ferry to the Westman Islands: Work backwards from the Landeyjahöfn sailing. If the timing is tight, the accommodation must serve the ferry rather than the stargazing plan.
- Trying only to shorten the drive: Compare the actual rates, cancellation terms and fuel plan first. You may not need Rangá's facilities.
- Needing an indoor fallback: In unstable weather, Hvolsvollur's town services usually provide more flexibility than a rural property.
Six questions before paying: if you cannot answer them, keep a cancellable room.
- Will I actually use the hotel's restaurant, hot pools or observatory tonight?
- Do I need a supermarket, fuel, the LAVA Centre, a public pool or room to change the route at short notice?
- Where is tomorrow morning's fixed deadline: Hella, the Highlands, Landeyjahöfn, Vík or somewhere farther east?
- Does the rate difference buy facilities I will use, or only an imagined chance of seeing the aurora?
- Are the same dates, room type, breakfast, parking, taxes and cancellation deadline genuinely being compared?
- If the stargazing or Highland plan is cancelled by weather, what useful purpose can this night still serve?

If the real answer is “I need to be near Vík,” return to one night or two nights in Vík instead of treating these two western South Coast hotels as eastern overnight bases.
