The northern section of F208 and F35 have opened earlier in recent years, but the section towards Eldgjá and southern F-roads can still lag by several weeks.
Most main mountain routes are within their summer window, but each road still needs a separate check; remote sections such as F210 and F261 cannot be judged by month alone.

The most useful part of the recent data is that it separates one mountain road into different sections. On F208, the northern section from Sigalda to Landmannalaugar opened as early as 23 May and as late as 23 June between 2021 and 2025; the Landmannalaugar–Eldgjá section opened as early as 16 June and as late as 6 July. If you write “F208 open” into your itinerary, you may only be looking at one part of the road.

Use the table to see which section should not be fixed too early, not to choose a single “safe month”. In mid-June, you can plan Landmannalaugar via the northern section or a lowland transfer and keep the north–south crossing as a fallback; if you still want F210 in early July, reserve a full alternative day for a later opening. This way, a closed road changes one cell in the itinerary rather than forcing you to rebuild accommodation and the return route.
Three highland areas, three different timing problems
The Iceland highlands destination hub is a useful starting point for separating three directions. Landmannalaugar is about colourful ridges, hot springs and short walks, with transport handled by a lowland transfer; Kerlingarfjöll requires F35, F347 and the mountain activity to fit into the same day, so consecutive options are easier after late June; Hveravellir is more naturally a highland hot spring and en-route stop. When travelling north on Route 35, treat it as a separate plan rather than forcing it into Landmannalaugar.
If you have only four or five nights on the south coast, the highland branch on the map takes a full day and a lowland accommodation base. For Landmannalaugar, first read where to stay after a highland activity is cancelled; to add Kerlingarfjöll to a ring-road trip, read Kerlingarfjöll by day tour or self-drive, keeping the meeting point, F35 and vehicle responsibility separate. Both are closer to a real decision than asking whether “Iceland’s highlands are possible in June”.
Self-drive and day tours: different responsibilities
A self-drive plan must pass checks for the F-road opening, rental-car contract, permitted vehicle, unbridged rivers, fuel and retreat route. A 4WD addresses only one requirement; if the road remains closed, the number of wheels is irrelevant. A day tour puts the highland driving in the guide’s hands, but fixes the meeting point and return-to-town time. From Reykjavík, the round trip usually includes transfers, mountain-road access and breaks as well as time at the sight; it suits travellers who want one highland theme without taking on a full rental-car crossing. If the activity is postponed, keep accommodation in Reykjavík or a lowland base such as Hella so the next day can be changed more easily.
Put the month back into the itinerary: three versions prevent a bad bet

One cost is often missed: a highland morning starts with filling water and putting on waterproof layers, and the car may return with mud and wet shoes. If the next night is booked far away, that clean-up adds to driving fatigue. Place the highland day between nights at the same base and leave an evening for laundry, supplies and sleep; that usually improves the whole route more than adding another F-road.

The version worth booking is the one you can cancel
The highland opening window is short, while the route is long. Put a day tour or self-drive day in the middle of the trip, with a lowland exit on each side; when the road opens, go into the highlands, and when it does not, return to Hella, Reykjavík or the south-coast backbone. You are protecting the whole trip, not last year’s opening date.
Before setting out, run three checks again: the mountain-road map, the vehicle or activity access rules, then the day’s wind, snow, river water and return time against your accommodation. If one condition still fails, move the highlands to the fallback column and give the spare day to a lowland route with sights, food and indoor options. Can I visit Landmannalaugar in June?
The second half of June is more promising, but opening dates can differ by several weeks between sections of F208; check the entrance and transport method you actually plan to use.
Are all highland roads open in July?
Not necessarily. July usually brings more choice, but remote sections such as F210 and F261 still need to be checked against the road map, weather and vehicle conditions.
Can I drive an F-road if I have a 4WD?
4WD is only one vehicle condition. If the road is closed, the rental contract does not allow the route, river crossings or the day’s conditions are unsuitable, use a transfer or cancel.
Are day tours better in early June?
If the operator has confirmed its operating window, a day tour can reduce self-drive responsibility. The meeting day still takes a full day, so stay somewhere lowland where changing the route is practical.
Can I visit Kerlingarfjöll and Hveravellir on the same day?
Both are reached in the Route 35 highland direction, but actual stop time, the F347 branch and same-day road conditions make the schedule tight; consider combining them only with a full day available.
