Compare the hotel door, not the fare on the first screen
For a central Reykjavík stay with no long arrival-day drive, an airport bus or confirmed transfer is usually simpler than collecting a car straight after landing. Two people heading to the Golden Circle or South Coast the next day can compare a split rental period instead. With four people, bulky luggage and a hotel awkwardly placed from a bus stop, compare the per-vehicle cost of a taxi or pre-booked transfer with the bus total. If you will drive throughout the trip, collection is part of that day’s schedule; a rental is not free airport transport simply because it has already been paid for.

These scores assess whether an arrival-day transport plan can handle the real work involved. They are not ratings of a bus or rental-car provider. Fares, schedules, stops, desk hours, luggage rules, parking and flight-delay arrangements can change; check the official page, your booking confirmation and same-day notices before paying.
BSÍ, a designated stop, a hotel and a street address are not the same endpoint. Confirm the final walk, shuttle, taxi or parking arrangement before counting the trip as complete.
Two or four passengers, cabin bags or large cases, child equipment and vehicle size all change the total. A per-person fare cannot tell you whether everything will fit in one vehicle.
A bus depends on fixed stops and departures; a rental depends on the desk, vehicle inspection, parking and the first stretch of road. Both options need waiting time written into the schedule.
A bus may need a final transfer; a rental adds hire cost, cover, fuel, parking, deposit cash flow and arrival-day time. The lowest headline price does not automatically win.
Late arrivals, early flights, winter roads and timetable changes can require a backup for both transfers and rentals. Confirm delay policies, amendments and hotel access in advance.
For a first night in the city, convenience usually means reaching the door with less friction. If you leave the city the next morning, a rental car gains a real purpose. Four people do not automatically need a car, and two people do not automatically suit a bus.
This card separates the per-person fare from the full cost of reaching the door. If four cases still have to be carried uphill from the final stop, the bus may be cheap only on the receipt. If you are staying several nights in the city and the car has no role, its freedom may amount to daily parking and deposit costs.

The small mistake most easily made in the airport hall is to see a bus fare first and compare it with the “from per day” figure on a rental search page. The first may be a per-person price to one particular endpoint; the second still needs documents, inspection, fuel, parking, deposit and the effort of handling luggage at the start. Your real comparison begins when you leave the arrivals hall and ends at the hotel door or at accommodation where you can stop comfortably.

A public bus is not simply a cheaper rental car, and a rental car is not merely a faster bus. The bus exchanges personal driving on unfamiliar roads for fixed stops and departures. The rental gives you control over luggage and the next day’s direction, while placing the first road decisions in your hands. Two or four travellers: the turning point appears after you split the bill
Strætó’s official 2026 Southern Peninsula fare document lists an adult one-way KEF–Reykjavík fare of 2,400 ISK. Airport express services, transfers and taxis must be checked on the relevant operator’s payment page for the route, date and passenger count. Rather than pretending to give a rental price that will always be correct, use the same calculation for every option: bus total = per-person fare × number of passengers + final stretch; rental-car total = rental + cover + collection/return transport + fuel + parking + deposit cash flow.

If four people are going only to central Reykjavík, the lower bus fare may still be the sensible choice. If four people leave immediately for separate bases, the rental total may be less than expected. Conversely, two people staying three nights in the city may pay for a car they do not use simply because they might need it tomorrow. Passenger count decides one line of the calculation; it cannot decide when the car has a real purpose.
Five points on the map: the endpoints are not the same address
The map below breaks airport transport into five real geographic points. KEF is where the international flight lands and where rental-car responsibility begins. Keflavík is the airport-side town for accommodation, supermarkets and the first or final night. BSÍ is a city bus interchange, not the front door of every hotel. Central Reykjavík involves a different balance of walking and parking. Selfoss represents the point at which renting a car starts serving a longer-distance transfer. The map does not promise a timetable or journey duration.

The transport worth paying for is often the one that moves an unrecoverable mistake away from the most tiring part of the day. With an early flight, snow, older travellers or a hotel away from the stop, I would first include the value of reaching the door directly. With several nights in the city and a day tour the next morning, I would save the rental for the day when flexibility has a job to do. For day tours, transfers and fixed meeting points, continue to the order for booking activities and checking activity meeting points; one bus fare cannot answer for an entire day. Two people do not automatically belong on a bus, and four people do not automatically need a rental car. Decide which task you do not want to carry today: moving cases, finding a stop, parking, driving at night or following a fixed timetable. Ten questions to answer before departure
- Does the bus or transfer confirmation end at BSÍ, a designated stop, the hotel or another meeting address?
- How much walking, stair use, changing vehicles and luggage handling lies between the endpoint and the hotel?
- For two or four travellers, are you comparing the same product, luggage allowance and cancellation rule?
- If the flight is delayed, where is the handling policy for the bus, transfer or rental desk written?
- Have the rental desk, collection time, inspection, deposit and first fuel level been confirmed?
- Does the first-night hotel have a legal drop-off point, parking and a night entrance?
- Are you genuinely leaving Reykjavík the next day? If not, what will the car do on city days?
- If roads, activities or weather change, which option is easiest to cancel, replace with a night’s accommodation or amend?
- Are you comparing a per-person price, a per-vehicle price or the full cost to the hotel door?
- Has the driver kept the option of not driving during the most tiring part of arrival?
A good airport-transport decision does not push every traveller towards the same vehicle. It lets the first night avoid four new problems at once. If Reykjavík is your base, enter the city first. If the first night is limited to the city, compare the full cost of a bus, transfer or taxi to the hotel door. Include collection, inspection, parking and any unused rental time instead of looking only at the one-way transport fare.
Does the choice change for two people compared with four?
Four people can divide a per-vehicle cost, but luggage volume, the drop-off location and waiting time still need to be compared together. Two people may find a per-person bus easier to justify, but the actual turning point depends on your endpoint.
If I have bought an airport-bus ticket, will it take me directly to the hotel?
Not necessarily. Check the product’s stop, connecting arrangements and hotel location. “To Reykjavík” does not mean every bag reaches the hotel door, and delays or transfers need time in reserve.
What is the most sensible way to arrange the rental if self-drive begins the next day?
Put collection, inspection and the first road journey on the day you genuinely need to leave the city. Confirm the rental location and opening hours, and decide where the luggage will stay after hotel checkout.
