Can You Visit Vestrahorn and Jökulsárlón in One Day?

The two sights sit along the same Route 1 corridor on a map, but they demand very different kinds of time. Vestrahorn depends on the tide line, mountain shadows and light, while Jökulsárlón is shaped by boat departures, drifting ice and parking traffic. Calling them simple roadside stops misses the details that can throw off the day: which way you leave Höfn, your accommodation check-out, the boat check-in time and whether one photograph is worth staying an extra night.

Vestrahorn and Jökulsárlón from Höfn

When you stay in Höfn, the smoothest plan is to visit Stokksnes first thing. The drive itself is short, but allow time for entry, the gravel road and walking on the beach; a typical photography stop takes 60–90 minutes, and longer if you are waiting for mountain reflections or the tide. In low cloud, Vestrahorn’s defining view may disappear, so keep this stop flexible rather than squeezing the Jökulsárlón boat trip simply because you have already arrived.

After Stokksnes, drive west. Jökulsárlón is roughly 80 kilometres from Höfn, with about an hour of road time; distant detours such as Fjaðrárgljúfur can be worthwhile, but they will break this one-day timing plan. After parking at Jökulsárlón, allow at least two hours for a short lakeside walk and boat check-in; Diamond Beach is across the road, and needs another 45–75 minutes if you do not want to reduce the ice-strewn beach to a view through the car window.

How to work backwards from an afternoon boat

Amphibian boats and Zodiac boats have different check-in times and prices; adult boat tickets commonly cost around ISK 7,000–16,000 (about HK$385–880 / NT$1,350–3,600), while Zodiac trips are usually more expensive and more weather-sensitive. Count the check-in, life jacket, boarding and walk back to the car, not just the time on the water: the whole sequence takes two to three hours. If your boat leaves at 13:00, aim to start at Vestrahorn by 08:00 and eat lunch in the car or finish it in Höfn beforehand.

An afternoon boat works better when Jökulsárlón is the main event and Vestrahorn and Diamond Beach fill the morning. With a morning boat, stay near Jökulsárlón or Skaftafell and use Höfn for the previous evening’s photography. The real time-cost table

Without a boat trip, allow about 7–9 hours to visit both sights and return to Höfn; with a boat, plan for 10–12 hours. Fuel for two people costs about HK$250–450 (NT$1,000–1,800), with Stokksnes entry and boat tickets extra. One night’s accommodation commonly costs about HK$1,800–4,000 (NT$7,300–16,300), varying by date, room type and cancellation terms; packing sunrise, a boat trip and the entire eastbound drive into one day to save a night is usually a poor trade.

Sunrise, sunset and winter planning

In summer, daylight is long enough to put Vestrahorn at dawn or in the evening and leave Jökulsárlón for the daytime, but check the accommodation check-out time against the boat departure. From September to April, sunrise may still fall in darkness; check the weather and roads before deciding whether leaving Höfn early is sensible. Winter beaches are windy and roads can be icy, so photography takes longer than in summer and the return drive should not run into the last usable light.

If the weather hides the mountain shadows, complete Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach first and treat Vestrahorn as an optional stop you can drop. If the boat trip is cancelled, the Höfn coast still offers photography or a meal in town; keep one version of the day that needs no reservation so the route has an escape option. Read Iceland road conditions and check Route 1 again before leaving each day instead of relying on yesterday’s screenshot.

Should you stay in Höfn or near Jökulsárlón?

If you are driving into the Eastfjords the next day, staying in Höfn brings the eastbound start closer; if you are returning west towards Vík, accommodation near Jökulsárlón saves the return drive. Use the Höfn destination guide and base options east of the glacier lagoon to work backwards, rather than choosing a hotel solely by its distance from one sight.

When should you split this into two days?

If you want Vestrahorn at sunrise and an afternoon boat trip, if you are driving to the Eastfjords the next day, or if winter brings poor visibility, split the route. The extra night buys you light choices, a cancellation fallback and less fatigue; it does not merely add another place name to the list. With only six days, remove one of the two lagoon-area views and protect the main South Coast route.

For a combined activity-and-accommodation comparison, start with whether to stay near the ice cave at Skaftafell or near Jökulsárlón; if you only want coastal photographs, Vestrahorn and Jökulsárlón do not need to become one single “sightseeing day”.

Make the final drive part of the itinerary

After Diamond Beach, returning to Höfn takes about an hour. Continuing to Djúpivogur or into the Eastfjords adds at least two more hours. Decide the direction at breakfast, including fuel, dinner and the accommodation check-in time, rather than waiting in the Jökulsárlón car park. Sunset photography may be beautiful, but it can also send you onto the stretch of road you least want to drive in darkness.

When leaving Höfn, secure luggage before driving; for a short coastal stop, take only the camera and a jacket. Sand and wind at Stokksnes can leave shoes and socks wet, while the next stop at Jökulsárlón needs dry layers and warmth. Keep one change of clothes somewhere easy to reach; avoiding one full luggage search can recover more than ten minutes.

Fuel for two people costs about HK$250–450 (NT$1,000–1,800) per day, with boat tickets and entry fees extra; accommodation is about HK$1,800–4,000 (NT$7,300–16,300) a night and varies by date and room type. If one extra night gives you morning light and a cancellation fallback, that cost is easier to control than changing a fixed boat ticket at short notice. In summer, put the mountain view in the evening; in winter, protect daytime visibility at Jökulsárlón first and stop for photography only when there is enough light.

If the boat is cancelled, keep Jökulsárlón and dinner in Höfn, then move Vestrahorn to the following morning so the route still works.
