Iceland Ice Cave: Stay in Skaftafell or Jökulsárlón? How to Match Your Base to the Meeting Point

First separate the two meeting areas: below the glacier or beside the lagoon

Ice-cave activities in Skaftafell usually meet around the national-park entrance or Base Camp, then continue towards an ice tongue such as Falljökull. Jökulsárlón ice-cave trips often meet at the Glacier Lagoon car park before a shuttle or 4WD vehicle takes you into the glacier area. They may both be marketed as “ice-cave tours”, but the right place to stay depends on the actual meeting point. If a booking page only says “South Coast”, look again for the meeting point, how early you must arrive and where equipment is collected.

That distinction changes your final evening. At Skaftafell, the practical plan is an early return, with waterproof trousers and spare socks ready; at Jökulsárlón, you can fit a glacier-lagoon sunset or Diamond Beach before or after the activity. Stay in Skaftafell: make the activity the main event of the morning

If you are joining a glacier walk, an ice-cave-and-walk combination, or a trip whose confirmation says Skaftafell Base Camp, staying nearby is the cleanest choice. The national park’s S1 glacier trail is about 4.1 km and usually takes 1–1.5 hours on foot; it can be a short stretch before the activity or preserve half a day of scenery if the activity is cancelled. The practical catch is that you may still be walking back to the car in wet snow gear afterwards, so dinner and your room should not require another long detour.

Skaftafell also works well when you separate the night before from the activity day. On arrival, restock and check your soles and waterproof layers; the next morning, arrive early for the meeting time, then drive on towards the glacier lagoon or Höfn after the activity. Stay in Jökulsárlón: combine the lagoon, Diamond Beach and the activity in one day

When the meeting page says Jökulsárlón or Glacier Lagoon parking lot, a lagoon base has the clearest advantage. National-park information marks the Fellsfjara trail and the parking areas on both sides of the lagoon separately, with paths under the bridge linking the two; before or after the activity, see the lagoon first, then adjust your Diamond Beach stop around the tide and the amount of ice. This base is especially practical in winter: complete the fixed meeting in the morning, then decide on the beach or a short trail once you have the weather. Choosing one night: this small table is enough

With only one South Coast night, I would place the fixed activity on the second morning and sleep close to its meeting point on the first night; if you must return to Reykjavík the next day, do not add a distant attraction after the activity. With two South Coast nights, use Skaftafell first and the glacier lagoon or Höfn second, separating the glacier walk from the boat trip so that cancelling one still leaves a useful half-day. This is easier to execute than splitting two bases across one short night.

If the activity is cancelled, which base saves the day more easily?

Ice caves depend on the season, ice conditions and roads. The least forgiving plan is to keep a fixed room and face a long return drive after a cancellation. From Skaftafell, use the S1 glacier trail, Svartifoss or a drive along Route 1 towards the glacier lagoon to recover the day; from Jökulsárlón, reorder the boat trip, Fellsfjara, Diamond Beach and a short walk. Save the South Coast backup plan for a cancelled ice cave before departure, and protect your accommodation fallback when the road-conditions page shows snow or wind signals.

If the confirmation only says that “the activity content is decided on the day”, lower the score, but do not delete the whole glacier day at once. First check whether the alternative still leaves from the same meeting area, then decide whether to move to Höfn or back towards Vík.
