When only three afternoon hours remain, the choice is less about collecting two pins than protecting the next fixed thing. The second car park, boat check-in and drive to Höfn can quietly take the time you thought belonged to photographs. Compare what each lagoon contributes before adding both.
The names are similar, but the viewing experience is not. Fjallsárlón lies about 10 km west of Jökulsárlón, with the glacier tongue feeling closer to the lagoon and the shore usually offering a quieter, more concentrated view of the glacier itself. Jökulsárlón is the glacier lagoon most commonly added by Ring Road travellers; its shore, icebergs, Diamond Beach and boat activities form a more complete cluster of experiences. This is not simply a choice between one hidden place and one popular place. The two locations serve different roles in the same day.

Ten kilometres can still cost you dinner
The lagoons are close on a map, but that does not mean you should move between them within the same hour. Travelling east from Skaftafell, you reach Fjallsárlón first; Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach come later, and Höfn is often the next stop for supplies, dinner or a bed. If you are staying in Vík, turning back west makes both lagoons add-ons to an already long day. If you are staying in Höfn, continuing east after Jökulsárlón is more natural, but weather, parking and boat times still belong in the calculation. If I can visit only one, how do I choose between Fjallsárlón and Jökulsárlón?
Choose Fjallsárlón if you want to be close to the glacier tongue and are comfortable with a quieter scene and fewer services. Choose Jökulsárlón if you want an established shoreline flow and the listed boat activities to fit more easily into the day. This is a preference about the experience, not a ranking that guarantees the day’s ice conditions or crowd levels.
Can I fit both into the same day?
They are geographically close, but boat schedules, parking, walking and photography time do not connect themselves. If an amphibious boat or Zodiac is booked at Jökulsárlón, lock in check-in and departure first, then see whether Fjallsárlón can work as a short stop. Do not use “they are close” as a substitute for an actual timetable.
Do I have to book a boat?
No. Shore viewing at the two lagoons is already a different kind of plan. A paid boat activity is necessary only when you specifically want time on the water, a particular boat type and a fixed time in your route.
