Ice-cave / glacier activity

Weather warnings are handled by the Icelandic Met Office; road information answers whether the route is passable. The two pages do different jobs. Checking only one is like knowing the restaurant is open without confirming that you can reach it.

Hotel Vík í Mýrdal: no extra check-in puzzle after a late arrival
The official hotel page also places the hotel on Klettsvegur, a road parallel to Route 1, and lists family rooms plus an aurora wake-up service. That can matter for families, late arrivals or travellers who do not want to monitor the aurora forecast through the night. Standard rooms are about 17 m² and higher-floor double rooms about 23 m²; if the room is mainly for sleeping before an early meeting, I would put the price difference into cancellable terms first.

For two nights, children's breakfasts or avoiding a restaurant every day, these details matter more than the word "suite". The official page also lists check-in from 15:00 to midnight and asks guests to advise their arrival time; if your itinerary often runs past midnight, resolve that restriction before paying. Hotel Katla: 5 km is not far until you realise you forgot dinner

The outside-village location pays off only if you will stay for dinner, a soak and rest. The easiest aurora-room mistake is treating a possibility as a guarantee
Icelandic Met Office aurora forecastIt shows cloud cover, darkness hours and aurora activity together. Hotel photographs prove only that someone captured an aurora on one night; they cannot guarantee clear skies on your dates or the same orientation for your room. Hotel Vík offers an aurora wake-up service, which is more concrete for anyone who does not want to take turns watching the window all night. Ask other hotels directly if the service is not clearly stated; do not treat a review as a permanent facility.
I would not turn onto an unfamiliar side road late at night just to get farther from lights. When conditions allow, ask the hotel where it is safe to remain outdoors; if warnings, strong wind or fatigue make any part of the plan poor, go to bed. The aurora can wait for another night. Lost sleep will arrive on schedule during the first drive tomorrow.
Cancellation terms are not insurance; the real check is the deadline
Compare winter rates using the same date, number of guests, bed type and cancellation condition. "Free cancellation" still requires checking the deadline, Icelandic local time, prepayment and no-show treatment; a road closure does not automatically mean the hotel or platform refunds you. If an activity may move, first keep one night that does not require a move and identify a day that can be exchanged, then decide what flexibility is worth paying for. If that accommodation buffer is still unresolved, return to the five-day winter buffer plan. Do not use four cancellable bookings as a substitute for an adjustable route.
