Use two calendars: city events and countryside conditions
Visit Reykjavík treats December as a city festival season, with events across the centre, museums, Elliðaárdalur, family parks and neighbourhoods. Do not reduce the programme to one permanent Christmas village. Check the current calendar rather than inserting last year’s market dates. Make Reykjavík the Christmas base, without spending every day shopping

Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon requires a booking that fits the route. Keep city alternatives available when weather, transfers or holiday hours move.

Pair one fixed activity with one free alternative
Every paid or reserved item should have a no-extra-payment alternative. City events can become a walk through the harbour, Laugavegur and Tjörnin; a reserved lagoon can become a public pool or café; if a South Coast tour is cancelled, keep the day in Reykjavík.

A free alternative is useful for older travellers or children. In short daylight and low temperatures, less luggage movement and an earlier return can protect the day.
Book accommodation around not having to move: two city nights, one remote night
Reykjavík city centre suits festive walks and last-minute alternatives. KEF or Reykjanes suits an early flight, car return or Blue Lagoon booking. Before paying for a room, record the cancellation deadline, check-in time, breakfast availability, late-arrival key instructions and nearby food alternatives. A beautiful room cannot reopen a supermarket.

Should every day be fully scheduled during Christmas?

Should we drive the South Coast during Christmas week?
