Petra’s collection is a house and garden, not a quick photo stop

Petra’s Stone Collection fills the home and garden where Petra spent her life. Stones sit in glass cabinets, flower beds, walls and the cottage itself. The colour catches you first; the labels and places of origin take longer to absorb. Because one person built the collection over a lifetime, the visit feels more like entering a local story than walking through a conventional geology museum.

Allow one to two hours, beginning indoors and finishing in the garden. Children can look for colours, geodes and different textures, while non-geology fans still have a clear trail through the displays. Seasons and opening hours change, so put the visit in the middle of the day rather than hoping to squeeze it in before dinner.

Use the bay and Creative Center to decide whether the day grows

The bay walk is short and useful for a stretch before or after the collection. For a closer look at current local life, the Creative Center (Sköpunarmiðstöðin) occupies an old fish-freezing plant and hosts art, workshops and community events. The bay is a brief outdoor pause; the center is the part that can give a longer visit a subject.

In June 2026, the Innsævi Cultural Summer brings exhibitions, workshops and public programmes to several towns in Fjarðabyggð. If one lands on your date, Stöðvarfjörður can justify a night. Without a scheduled programme, Breiðdalsvík or Fáskrúðsfjörður may fit the following road better.

A workable south-to-north plan is to arrive around lunch, park once, visit the house and garden, then walk the bay. Budget roughly two to three hours. The indoor collection still gives the stop a purpose under low cloud, and the compact village is easy to handle with luggage in the car.

If Egilsstaðir is still your supply stop, leave with daylight to spare. Light and wind change quickly on the Eastfjords roads, and a half-hour lost in town can become a late final drive. Treat Petra’s collection as the fixed point, then protect the time needed for the next leg.

Choose the stop length before you arrive

For budgeting, allow 3,500–6,500 ISK (approx. HK$205–380 / NT$840–1,560) per person for dinner; collection entry and lodging are extra. The more important risk is missing the opening hours: you could reach the village and find the collection closed, while the next indoor alternative may require a long detour to a larger town. Scheduling it for the middle of the day is usually less stressful than trying to minimise every cost.
