Meleyri gives Route 1 a place to pause

Breiðdalsvík sits where Breiðdalsfjörður opens out, so the village, shore and valley are close without feeling compressed. Meleyri’s black sand lies opposite the hotel area: park once, walk towards the water and let the wind decide how long the shoreline deserves. After the drive from Höfn, that small reset can be more useful than adding another hour behind the wheel.

Breiðdalssetur occupies an old co-operative building and focuses on local history, geology and linguistic research. It offers a completely different wet-weather option from the beach. On an overcast day, visit the indoor exhibits first, then use the wind conditions to decide whether to walk along the coast. Both can be done while leaving your luggage in the car. Beljandi is a short walk; the valley is not

Beljandi sits in Breiðdalur valley and the walk from the road is brief, with two cascades and a pool waiting at the end. The time disappears on the approach: parking, turn-offs, Flögufoss and the drive back to Route 1 all belong in the plan. Keep the waterfalls together as one half-day outing instead of treating every name on the map as a separate five-minute stop.

In clear weather, begin at the beach, continue into the valley and return to the village for a meal in the afternoon. If low cloud or rain moves in, switch to the research centre, brewery and a short coastal walk. The alternatives are reasonably close to one another, though opening hours are more limited than in Reykjavík. Keep a version of the day that can finish early, so tonight’s fatigue does not slow tomorrow’s journey to Fáskrúðsfjörður.

Events are the clearest reason to turn a stop into a night

Beljandi brewery occupies a converted former slaughterhouse, giving a driving day somewhere indoors to end. The 2026 calendar lists a Hvanndalsbræður concert in September, a Nýdönsk performance in October and an Asian dinner in November. None of these is a daily attraction; each can change the lodging decision when your dates line up. Check the organiser’s page for tickets, opening times and any accommodation arrangements before you commit.

June’s Innsævi cultural summer brings workshops, exhibitions and community programmes to several towns across Fjarðabyggð, with Breiðdalsvík serving as a possible southern base on an event day. If you have only one night left in your itinerary, decide which direction you need to travel after the event. Stay in the village and you can begin with the valley the next morning; continue north and stay in Fáskrúðsfjörður to shorten the following section.

Match the stop to the time left in the day

For a rough budget, allow around 3,500–6,500 ISK per person for dinner, or approximately HK$205–380 / NT$840–1,560; price accommodation, fuel, the research centre and event tickets separately. The practical saving here is moving the car once and then walking, not assuming every stop is free or open. If a waterfall adds an extra hour of driving, keep it only when it changes what you will do next.
