The blue line on a map makes the first day of a Ring Road trip look deceptively easy: Reykjavík to Borgarnes is not far, but the day also includes the flight, car collection, luggage, supplies, your first time driving on the right and the latest realistic check-in. The value of a West Iceland night is not fewer kilometres; it is a simpler first decision tomorrow morning.
First separate reducing driving from reducing the first day's workload
Borgarnes is about 75 km from central Reykjavík. That figure is useful for orientation, but it should not be read as “easy after landing”. Starting at KEF also means reaching the terminal exit, checking the rental car, setting the navigation, buying water and food, dealing with a child seat, and stopping outside a supermarket to reorganise your luggage for the first time. A map counts wheel movement; it does not count an afternoon spent learning an unfamiliar rental car.
What a West Iceland night can buy is a choice tomorrow: start from a base where you have already checked in, take Route 1 north, or choose one direction among Hraunfossar, Snæfellsnes and Borgarfjörður. You do not have to decide whether West Iceland belongs in the trip only after checking out of a capital-area hotel. Borgarnes is useful when the morning has an exit
Visit West Iceland describes Borgarnes as a major service centre for the west. The town has accommodation, food, activities and places to rest; some walking routes require crossing Route 1, with no underpass or footbridge. That detail matters. It turns Borgarnes from a vague “stopover town” into a base with services and clear road boundaries.
If the first day ends with dinner and check-in, local supplies, a short walk and an easier breakfast may be more useful than a remote room with a view. The walking route is about 9.89 km and takes about two hours for the full circuit. That does not tell you to complete it on arrival; it shows that the town has an activity that can be shortened according to energy. In poor visibility or with tired companions, that flexibility is part of the accommodation's value.

Northbound tomorrow is the condition that makes this night work
Leaving Borgarnes, the first question is not how many attractions remain; it is which direction tomorrow must protect. If you are heading to Akureyri or continuing around Iceland, Borgarnes gives capital-area departure and the second day's northbound drive their own starts. If you are going into Snæfellsnes, decide whether to turn in from Borgarnes or reserve the peninsula for a complete night count. The Snæfellsnes destination entrance is more useful here than the abstract answer “stay one night in the west”.
If tomorrow really means returning to Reykjavík, joining a city activity or driving to the South Coast, this night may not reduce pressure. You will move the luggage out of the city and then drive back towards the same direction on day two; that gives a usable morning to check-out and re-entering the city. The easiest regret is confusing “drive a little farther” with “see another region”. If the first day already contains a long flight, car collection and shopping, Borgarnes only needs to do one job: let you leave tomorrow in a better state. If you arrive early and still have energy, keep a short bay walk or the Settlement Center as a backup; do not turn the backup into a required list.
Before paying, write the first-night job beside the room
- Will the arrival and car-collection times get you there safely before the latest check-in?
- Is the second day's first stop Route 1 north, Snæfellsnes, or actually the capital area again?

- If day one is delayed, can you stay out of West Iceland and still keep the original trip?
