Which factor is most likely to lock up your island day: luggage, vehicle space or the return?
These scores assess the check-in window, how manageable the luggage is, the cost of taking a car, the fallback after a port change and the connection to the next night's stay. They do not guarantee vehicle space, sailing conditions or storage. Recheck vehicle and rental terms, activities and accommodation cancellation deadlines for your dates.
The 30-minute rule is the deadline for completing check-in, and boarding stops 5 minutes before departure. It does not include parking, unloading cases, finding the counter or confirming vehicle space.
Under the terms, hand luggage stays with the passenger, in the cabin or inside the passenger's vehicle. It is not a dockside service that delivers your bags to a hotel.
A car reduces the amount you carry on the island, but you need space on the ferry and approval under the rental contract. Free parking describes the price; it does not mean the operator guards items left inside the car.
A move to Þorlákshöfn changes the mainland transport and the time needed to get back to your accommodation. Treating the alternative port as simply another pier on the same route is a costly mistake.
After reaching the mainland, you may still need to collect the car, eat, refuel and drive to Vík. Treat the return as the final task of the day so the accommodation does not become an unforgiving deadline.
The day works when early check-in and a separate luggage plan are in place. A car earns its place only after vehicle space, rental terms and the return route are confirmed.
Island days look light in photographs; luggage is not. You may pull a case from the hotel to the car, find your ticket at Landeyjahöfn, confirm vehicle space and join the boarding line. On Heimaey, there is real walking between the volcanic slopes, museums and the harbour. If you still have to drive to Vík or another stay after the return, the last sailing is not simply a trip back to the mainland. It is the beginning of the next stretch of fatigue.

Read this sentence precisely The official site says parking is free, while the same FAQ says the operator accepts no legal liability for vehicles left in those car parks. Free means there is no parking charge; it is not a storage or guarding service. Handle luggage and passports left in the car as your own risk.
Should your luggage board? Start with the kind of trip you are taking
Herjólfur's terms define hand luggage as luggage kept under the passenger's care, placed in the cabin or left in the passenger's vehicle. That distinction matters: a car deck does not mean the ferry provides a collection, tagging and hotel-delivery service for every passenger. A family travelling with a car can leave large items inside it, provided they accept responsibility for both the vehicle and its contents at Landeyjahöfn or on the island. Travellers without a car need to reduce what they truly need to a weight they can manage between the port, the vessel and a volcanic route.

On Heimaey, place the harbour, cliffs and luggage before the volcano
Landeyjahöfn is the mainland check-in and parking end. The Heimaey harbour is the point where luggage and walking have to be reconsidered after disembarkation. Eldfell is the uphill activity that calls for a separate decision about your energy and what you are carrying. The map below marks those three roles; it is not a sailing map or a luggage-storage map.
The map has one very practical use: with two large cases, you will not picture Eldfell after disembarkation as the last attraction beside the harbour. Ask whether your accommodation can take luggage early, then decide whether to bring uphill equipment. Until that is confirmed, leaving luggage in the car is not automatically safe; it simply places the responsibility on a mainland car park.

Herjólfur's current regular timetable lists several sailings each day, but the operator also warns that some journeys may sell out and recommends booking ahead. A timetable shows sailings you may be able to buy; it does not guarantee the roads or port conditions on your date. For a vehicle ticket in particular, secure the vehicle space before building the island plan. Without it, the entire luggage strategy may have to change.

A score of 6-7 can work as a day trip; 3-5 means reducing the island to one theme or staying overnight; at 0-2, settle accommodation, luggage and vehicle space first instead of trying to rescue the whole day with the latest return.
Wanting puffins, a volcano and a museum does not mean you need three sets of luggage. Give one theme to the island and keep another as a good-weather extra. After reaching Landeyjahöfn, collect the car and eat before deciding whether to continue along the South Coast. If your date coincides with puffin season or a local festival, read the Westman Islands puffin season and local-events trade-off; a summer photograph cannot answer a year-round planning question. If the bigger concern is whether a port change will turn your next hotel into an unforgiving deadline, read accommodation fallbacks when weather affects the Westman Islands ferry and recalculate the cancellation deadline and overland journey from Þorlákshöfn. Once the ferry has returned to the mainland, use whether to stay in Vík or near the port after the return to decide how far to travel tonight. A resilient island plan is not the one that uses every sailing; it is the one that still has a workable path after each change.
