Choose what you actually want to see: three kinds of island time compete

Heimaey’s sights may look close together, but the physical cost of a volcanic slope, a coastal walk and a museum is different. Eldfell is uphill; Eldheimar is an indoor history stop; puffin viewing depends on the season, sea conditions and departure point. Call all three “half-day sights” and you may only discover on the ferry that each one wants another twenty minutes.

If you have only one chance to visit an island, I would not stack three subjects together because “the island is close”. Pick one non-negotiable and one that can be dropped; that leaves room for wind, a late sailing or an afternoon when nobody wants the climb.

The practical reminder is simple: an island day starts with leaving the car on the mainland, then finding your way on the island. If you sleep in Vík, you still need to put yourself back on the South Coast route after landing; do not make the last sailing your only buffer.

Leave the mainland parking space, boarding deadline and time to collect the car after the return sailing in the same plan. If you are sleeping in Vík or farther east, keep energy and road conditions for the drive after landing.

For a same-day return, work backwards from the boarding cut-off, your last walk on the island and the time the ferry reaches the harbour. A timetable change also affects your South Coast room and next day's activity, so allow room to adjust instead of pricing only the crossing.

A day trip needs an exit that lets you finish early

After arriving on the early sailing, deal with the toilet, water and return-sailing time at the harbour, then choose Eldheimar or Eldfell. If the wind is strong or the ground is wet, the indoor stop protects your afternoon energy; if the wind and walking conditions are good, add a short coastal stop before returning. Do not walk to the furthest point first and only then notice that the sailing is close.

To add puffins to the same day, check where the product departs, whether it fits your booked sailing and whether you can return to another island plan if it is cancelled. “Seasonal” does not mean that every date produces a sighting; sea conditions and wildlife cannot be scheduled. What an overnight stay really buys is deciding again tomorrow morning

I would choose one night in three situations: when someone in the group needs a slower pace and the return sailing would turn every stop into a countdown; when you want to separate the volcano slope from a sea activity rather than ask your body to switch twice in one day; and when the Westman Islands sit naturally in the middle of your South Coast route, with no early flight or long transfer the next day. If this is your final South Coast night and a ferry change would collide with departure plans, the mainland is the steadier choice.

Start with the Westman Islands destination page for a base on the island. There is one useful dividing line: are you treating the Westman Islands as one day inside the South Coast, or as a base for part of the whole trip? Before departure, I would write the final return-sailing time at the top of the itinerary and work backwards from it. Once you know that 15:40 is your finish time, the Eldfell slope, harbour lunch and the coastal photograph you have been hoping for become honest constraints; every “while we are here” no longer quietly costs another half-hour.

Six questions to answer before you pay

If you are taking large luggage, leaving a car at Landeyjahöfn or still driving along the South Coast after the return sailing, read the practical split for taking luggage onto the Heimaey ferry. 1. Have the outbound and return sailings been checked by date on the official Herjólfur page?
2. Does your rental car have written approval to board, and what do the vehicle-space and check-in deadlines say?
3. If you complete only the indoor stop or a short harbour walk, is there still enough buffer for the return?
4. If puffin or sea activity is cancelled, do your accommodation and next-day route still work?
5. Is the island priority the volcano slope, indoor history or a sea activity—and have you mistakenly booked all three?
6. How long must you drive after landing, and have you allowed for ferry-return fatigue when planning the hotel check-in?

If you cannot answer two of these, do not use “it is not far” to talk yourself into paying. Ferry, accommodation and activity plans should leave one another a way out; that is the practical reason to add the Westman Islands to a South Coast itinerary.
