Höfn's value is not that it has more sights; it gathers the evening's practical jobs. Djúpivogur's value is not simply that it feels more atmospheric; its harbour, old houses, egg sculpture, pool and coastal walks can make a complete afternoon at small-town scale. If the activity ends with only enough time to check in and eat, quiet does not automatically become an experience worth paying for.

A short extra drive comes with three kinds of cost
From Jökulsárlón to Höfn or Djúpivogur, a map gives you direction; the practical difference is whether you still need to park, find dinner, buy supplies, arrange breakfast and make a fixed meeting time the next day. Put the room-price difference aside for a moment. This night's cost includes the time the driver must stay alert, the fallback when the road slows and the return kilometres you may have to cover tomorrow if the choice is wrong.
“Höfn is practical, Djúpivogur has atmosphere” is too simple a conclusion. The choice becomes clear only when you can name tomorrow morning's first task, the time still available tonight and the alternative if rain or a cancelled activity changes the plan. Otherwise, staying nearer the activity area around Skaftafell / Öræfi is often the option you are less likely to regret.
The map shows direction, not that both towns are interchangeable
Visit South Iceland places Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon about 79 km west of Höfn. That figure is not a promise about driving time; it is a reminder that the activity meeting point, hotel and next coastal stop are never the same address. Visit Austurland presents Djúpivogur as a slower east-coast point and notes that mountain roads may not be suitable as a shortcut around the Ring Road in some seasons.
Höfn is not “more ordinary”; it keeps your fallback open
If you still need food, fuel, a response to a vehicle warning, a toilet or a wider choice of restaurants after Jökulsárlón, Höfn's value appears before its photographs do. Once you know you want a room in town, read the Hotel Höfn page and compare the same-date room, breakfast, parking and three checked platforms. Do not jump from a vague “is Höfn worth it?” page into an unqualified hotel search.
Djúpivogur is not an upgraded Höfn; it asks for real time
Djúpivogur can make a lovely afternoon: you do not need to cover the harbour, Langabúð, the egg sculpture, the pool and Búlandsnes in one visit, and you can stop when the weather turns. Its appeal lies in having another way to spend the time, not another list of compulsory sights. If you arrive with only an hour, use the Djúpivogur destination guide to choose a short-stop option. If tomorrow begins with an inland drive, a scheduled activity or an early meeting, a leisurely coastal stop should not take priority.

- How much usable daylight remains when the Jökulsárlón activity actually ends?
- Is tomorrow eastbound, westbound or inland first? Can you describe that as one concrete job?
- Does the driver still have the energy for the coast, parking, dinner and check-in?
- Do you need fuel, food, medication, vehicle services or more restaurant choice tonight?
- If Búlandsnes, Papey or the pool does not work out, is Djúpivogur still worth the night?
- Do the accommodation's latest check-in, breakfast start and cancellation terms fit tomorrow's fixed timing?
- If a road alert worsens, how much rerouting cost are you willing to carry for a prepaid night?
If you cannot answer two of them, do not choose the room with the lowest price first. Return to the eight-day Ring Road night plan and rebalance the south-east coast; if you only need an East Iceland base, compare Seyðisfjörður and Egilsstaðir.
