Break “getting to the airport” into four time costs

From central Reykjavík to KEF, the airport-bus journey is often quoted as about 45 minutes. Add the hotel transfer to BSÍ, waiting to board, intermediate stops and the walk after arrival, and plan on 1 hour 15 minutes for the full leg. If you need to reach the airport by 05:00 from a city-centre hotel, leaving at 04:15 is not automatically safe; check the available service first, then the check-in cut-off. For a group of three or more, with one large bag each, a taxi saves transfers and luggage handling rather than necessarily saving money. The city centre to KEF is about 50 kilometres; for planning, use roughly HK$1,100–1,700 / NT$4,400–6,800 for a taxi. A return bus journey is about HK$500–900 / NT$2,000–3,600 per person, with fares changing by date and product. Splitting a taxi four ways narrows the difference, but you still need to book and confirm night-time availability.

Three transport choices, and the problem each one solves

Flexibility on a bus ticket does not mean you can arrive whenever you like. For the return, choose a departure by the time you need to reach the airport; if you miss the hotel pick-up, you may have to make your own way to BSÍ. City hotels are often another walk from the bus stop. A map may say eight minutes, but rain, two suitcases and finding the entrance can stretch those eight minutes. Check the actual boarding point before booking, rather than looking only at the hotel’s neighbourhood.

Staying in Reykjavík: how much of the final half-day is usable?

For a late flight, the city-centre advantage is straightforward: after checking out, you can walk to Hallgrímskirkja, the Old Harbour or a supermarket, leave your luggage in storage and keep another two or three hours. For an afternoon departure, lunch, returning to the hotel for your bags and boarding the transfer all compete for the same window; if you need to leave the city by 13:00, choose just one nearby morning activity. Staying in Keflavík: keep the fixed early-morning pressure near the airport

For an early flight, winter snow and wind, or a long drive back from Vík or Höfn on the final day, an airport-side stay is usually easier to control. Keflavík town is about a 5–10 minute drive from KEF, but check each hotel’s airport transfer, breakfast start time and rental-car return location. For self-drivers, “where to stay on the last night” and “when to return the car” are one decision. Refuel first, photograph the car’s condition at the return point, hand over the keys and take the transfer bus, while still leaving time for check-in and security. Should the Blue Lagoon be on the last day?

The Blue Lagoon sits between the airport and Reykjavík, which makes it look ideal, but you must handle luggage, an entry slot and the journey to the terminal in one sequence. Treat it as a final half-day only for an afternoon or late flight, once luggage storage and onward transport are confirmed; for an early flight, do not compress your airport buffer around a spa visit. Three workable timelines, counted back from the flight

1. 09:00 flight: Aim to reach KEF at about 06:00; stay airport-side, leave around 05:00 and confirm the car-return and transfer opening times first. Consider central Reykjavík only when the earliest booked bus is early enough.
2. 13:00 flight: Aim to reach KEF at 10:00; a city-centre stay leaves room for breakfast and a short walk, with departure around 08:00 and time for luggage collection, transfers and road conditions.
3. 19:00 flight: Aim to reach KEF at 16:00; a city-centre stay can still support a half-day, but collect your bags and start the airport journey before 14:30. Add the Blue Lagoon only when the booking and luggage storage both fit.
