First find out whether your return is at the terminal
The rental companies listed by KEF do not all operate from the same place. Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt and others have terminal service points, while many suppliers operate off airport; the official list may direct you to a driver pickup, the “Other Buses” area or a separate address. That changes the morning: a terminal return mainly needs time for queues and handover, while an off-airport return also requires the correct address, luggage transfer and a shuttle.
Do not rely on an old guide or memory for the rental location or shuttle arrangement. A pickup map from six months ago is not a return plan. The day before departure, open the official KEF rental car locations and your rental company’s confirmation email. Confirm the return address in the contract, whether the shuttle is still provided, and whether you must handle luggage or fuel before you reach the terminal.

Read the fuel, charge and cleaning clauses before the final night
“Return with a full tank” is common wording, but EV charge, receipts, cleaning and administration fees vary by supplier. Lotus’s published terms, for example, require fuel cars to return full and EVs to return with at least 50% charge; a shortfall may lead to top-up and administration fees. That is Lotus’s rule, not a universal KEF rule. Read your own contract the night before instead of checking the gauge outside the terminal.
The afternoon before, photograph the body, dashboard and fuel level in good light; remove obvious rubbish and bag wet gear separately; then save the final fuel station and return address as separate destinations. The photos preserve a handover record. The separate addresses stop navigation from sending you to the terminal when the company’s office is elsewhere. That small preparation is more useful on departure morning than squeezing in another coastal drive.
Test your payment method before you finish fuelling. A self-service station PIN, temporary pre-authorisation and rental deposit are separate from the final fuel charge. Use the last fifteen minutes at night to protect the morning
Set aside your passport, rental number, fuel receipts, every key, parking or toll information and luggage before bed. Check the full sequence on a map: hotel → fuel station → return point → terminal. If any leg depends on “it should be nearby,” resolve it before dark. KEF states that the city centre is about 40 km from the airport, or roughly 40 minutes by road; that figure excludes handover and terminal procedures.
Blue Car currently lists its KEF office at Blikavöllur 3, with winter hours generally 05:00–02:00, and offers key box return outside the office. Lotus’s return arrangement is: summer (June 1 to October 31) office hours 05:00–02:00, winter (November 1 to May 31) 05:00–01:00; their listed after-hours periods are 19:00–02:00 and 19:00–01:00 respectively. Those are each company’s published arrangements, not KEF-wide rules. The supplier, date and self-service eligibility can change the process. Use your confirmation email and the operator’s current page as the final authority.
Choose a KEF-side hotel only after you know the return route
An off-airport return, an early flight, winter roads, one driver, wet gear or companions who need more time to organise all favour a KEF/Reykjanes base. It will not remove queues, but it keeps address, fuel and room problems close enough to fix the night before.
Only after confirming you’ll stay on the airport side should you compare hotels. Compare KEF Rooms Only After the Return Address Is Confirmed
These links search Keflavík-area hotels. Use the same dates, guest count, breakfast and parking assumptions, late-arrival plan and free-cancellation deadline when comparing the final total. Distance from the terminal does not tell you how far the rental company’s actual return point is.
Arriving at KEF is not the same as returning the car
Many travellers enter only “Keflavík Airport” and start searching for the rental company after reaching the terminal. If the supplier is off site, follow the contract address first, then handle the shuttle, key box or counter. Measure the hotel-to-terminal distance separately from the hotel-to-return-point distance: the first affects the flight, while the second determines how manageable the final drive is.
Before bed, save the company address, phone number and return instructions beside an offline map. In rain, with luggage already out of the car, searching for a three-week-old email is exactly the delay this backup prevents.
Give everyone a handover job before leaving the hotel
Groups often lose time when everyone leaves the car and the passport, contract, keys, charging cable and carry-ons are spread across different seats. A clearer split is for one person to photograph the car, check fuel and hand over the keys while another moves the large bags and confirms the shuttle stop or terminal entrance. If the supplier requires everyone at the counter, go together.
The split matters even more with children, older travellers or camera equipment. Agree on the next meeting point and on who stays with the luggage until handover is complete. If the driver must sign or show documents, keep them with that person rather than distributing them through several backpacks.
If a shuttle follows the return, confirm its luggage capacity, departure point and backup contact before bed. Those details tell you whether five minutes is realistic or whether you need a much larger buffer, and they keep the group together.
Four answers to have before you leave the hotel
One: Is my return address actually the terminal? Two: What are the company’s written requirements for fuel, charge, cleaning, and key handover? Three: How do I and my luggage get to the terminal after handover? Four: If roads, queues, or the key box cause issues, how much time do I have that isn’t relying on luck?
Once all four answers are clear, choosing between Reykjavík and KEF for the last night becomes a timetable decision rather than a gamble.
