The harbour, visitor centre, restaurants, supermarket and indoor activities are close together, so the original hiking day is easiest to turn into several manageable blocks.
The drive is short and can pair with Bolafjall or a coastal walk, but tunnels, wind and visibility still matter. Treat it as a possible alternative, not a risk-free backup.
It pays off only when both the sailing schedule and sea conditions work. If accommodation, a ferry or a flight follows, waiting uses up the route’s buffer.
First, separate a cancelled day from a failed trip
Hornstrandir has no roads, so every day trip and hike depends on a boat. West Tours’ 2026 schedule page lists different operators and stops departing from Ísafjörður and Bolungarvík; sailing times are approximate, and the skipper has the final say on cancellations. That changes the replanning decision immediately. If the notice arrives early in the morning, there is little value in forcing in a distant attraction. You need a half-day that can finish in town, not another excursion that must happen.
Save a screenshot of the cancellation notice, the booked date and the next available sailing, then check the last free-cancellation time on your accommodation booking. If you need to move towards Súðavík or Patreksfjörður the following day, waiting on an uncertain boat can cost a night’s sleep, a resupply stop and an entire section of Westfjords transport. If you stay in Ísafjörður, do not fill the empty afternoon with another distant attraction. The harbour, museums, visitor centre, swimming pool and restaurants work because each can be finished within an hour or two. Add a coastal walk only if the wind eases. You may still receive confirmation of the next sailing before dinner, without tying the rest of the day to an uncertain outing.
If you are already staying in Bolungarvík, Bolafjall or the village coast can make sense on the cancellation day. Driving there from Ísafjörður at short notice still means allowing for the tunnel, parking, wind and the return journey. Another operator will also have its own check-in and refund conditions, so the original ticket cannot simply be transferred. If you do switch harbours, confirm the new operator’s meeting address, luggage rules, return harbour and whether the original booking can be cancelled.
How to keep accommodation without paying twice
Accommodation is limited in the Westfjords, and the worst cancellation outcome is losing your original room while failing to find another one at short notice.
