Hornstrandir has no roads, so a boat ticket fixes more than the departure time: it chooses your landing point, the trails that fit the day and the shape of the return. Changing ports can alter the hotel night before, where you leave the car, how much you carry and whether a missed sailing can be recovered before the next booking.

Choose the landing point before comparing the ports
Boats may leave from Ísafjörður or Bolungarvík, but that does not make the two routes interchangeable. Hesteyri offers an abandoned village, short coastal walks and cultural scenery. Hornvík is closer to the Hornbjarg cliffs, with itineraries that often involve longer walking and a firm return-to-boat time. Veiðileysufjörður appears more often in transfers for multi-day hikes. If what you want is puffin viewing, search by the landing point rather than stopping at a list of boat tickets that look alike.
Ísafjörður is the Westfjords’ most practical base. The night before, you can buy water, lunch and fuel, then follow the confirmation email to the designated harbour in the morning; after returning, you may still have time to deal with wet clothes and the next day’s rental car. A Bolungarvík departure suits travellers staying north, but do not assume every “Hornstrandir tour” meets there. The booking page must agree on four details: departure port, meeting address, latest check-in time and return port.
How to read the 2026 schedule: a fixed departure is not a fixed return
Published 2026 schedules show that some operators provide regular service to the reserve from 1 June to the end of August. Common tables list a 09:00 departure from Ísafjörður, but some destinations run only on particular days and some services leave at 16:00. Example one-way prices include about 13,900–14,900 ISK to Hesteyri (about HKD 650–700/TWD 2,700–3,000), about 14,900 ISK to Veiðileysufjörður and about 19,300 ISK for the longer route to Hornvík. Round-trip day tours, guides and transfers are priced separately; do not treat a one-way figure as the full activity budget.
The return is where people most often misread the table. A regular schedule may show only the departure from Ísafjörður, while the return transfer depends on the landing point, the day’s route and sea conditions. “Departs at 9:00” does not mean you will definitely be back at the same harbour at 17:00. For an overnight stay, confirm the return date, pickup point and luggage rules, and keep the following night in Ísafjörður. If the operator allows different companies for the outbound and return legs, the change rules may differ too; without written confirmation, do not treat two separate boat tickets as a guaranteed connection.

How to use the two hours before the boat
The night before, save your ticket, passport, offline map and accommodation address on your phone, and copy them onto paper. For a day trip, take only a daypack: waterproof jacket, rain trousers, warm mid-layer, hat, gloves, water, a lunch that can take a knock, power bank and a small first-aid kit. Jeans and canvas shoes may look fine at the harbour, but on wet grass and stream crossings they become extra weight. Ask in advance whether a large pack, camera equipment or baby items can be stored; a cabin is not a hotel wardrobe.
Do not connect the boat to the last bus of the day or a flight that has just arrived. Allow at least 45–60 minutes from the hotel to the harbour for walking, finding parking, collecting tickets and putting on waterproofs; if you need to drive from Bolungarvík to Ísafjörður, add road and weather buffer time. Use the actual harbour on the map rather than searching only for the town name. The skipper may delay or cancel for wind and waves, so this is not an activity where arriving “a little late” is acceptable.
After a day trip, the smoothest plan is to sleep at the same base and drive towards the southern Westfjords or connect to Akureyri the next day. If you must change bases, choose cancellable accommodation and avoid a long activity with a fixed start time. For an overnight hike, treat the night after returning to port as part of the itinerary: wet clothes, stove, sleeping bag and other gear need time to sort, so schedule Dynjandi or Patreksfjörður for the following day. This removes one backtrack and one rushed repack in the rain.
What weather disruption can cost you
Sea transport to Hornstrandir is affected by wind, waves, visibility and harbour conditions. Check the Icelandic Met Office wind and wave forecast before departure and screenshot the operator’s cancellation and change terms; a sunny city photograph is not evidence that the open sea is calm. If a day trip is cancelled, the most practical alternatives are the Ísafjörður swimming pool, a museum or a short coastal walk, while moving the boat ticket to the next day. Keeping the nights before and after flexible is often more economical in practice than chasing the lowest room rate at the start.
If you have already booked a non-refundable hotel in the next area, missing the return date can cost you the activity, accommodation and car-rental change fee at the same time. For a rough conversion, use about HKD 0.056 per 1 ISK and TWD 0.24 per 1 ISK; exchange rates are for budgeting only, and the payment page should follow the bank’s rate on the day. A one-way ticket may look modest, but once you add two nights in Ísafjörður, meals, equipment rental and a day when you cannot drive, allowing about HKD 2,500–4,500/TWD 10,000–18,000 per person for a day activity is closer to a workable planning figure. Guided or multi-day products may add substantially more.

Fix the landing point before you compare departure ports
Choose Hesteyri for a shorter trail and village atmosphere, and Hornvík for cliffs and a longer walk with an open return day. If you are already staying north, count the northern-port advantage only when the confirmation names Bolungarvík as the meeting point. Add at least one city-buffer night to an overnight hike, and do not tie the return boat to a non-refundable change of base that same evening.

If you are staying in Ísafjörður, planning your first visit or need change flexibility, prioritise Ísafjörður. Choose the northern port only when you are staying north and the booking clearly names Bolungarvík as the meeting point.
Does the boat ticket include the return journey?
Not necessarily. Published tables often separate one-way fares from day-trip return fares, so confirm whether the outbound trip, return, transfers, guide and equipment are included before booking.
Can I drive out of the Westfjords on the evening of a day trip?
Do not make a long transfer after returning to port your default plan. Sea conditions can affect the boat, while an extra night at the base gives you room for delays and time to deal with wet gear.
Do I need camping equipment?
A day hike usually needs only waterproof clothing, food and water. For a multi-day hike, check the product line by line for a sleeping bag, tent, stove, food and luggage weight.
