Choose the activity before choosing a fjord base

Photos make Eastfjords distances look deceptively small. Egilsstaðir is about 27 km from Seyðisfjörður over Fjarðarheiði. The map may suggest roughly half an hour, but a slow vehicle, fog or photo stops can turn the return journey into two hours. Staying by the water does not make every errand closer. Shopping, laundry, fuel and the next ring-road connection are quicker to handle in Egilsstaðir. Seyðisfjörður: keep the morning for boats and waterfalls

A same-day return from Egilsstaðir appears to add only about an hour of driving, but parking, getting in and out of the car and pass conditions add to it. For one activity, that trade-off may still be sensible; for two consecutive days in the fjord, moving the hotel to Seyðisfjörður is more reasonable. Egilsstaðir: the base that can rescue a disrupted itinerary

Egilsstaðir suits travellers arriving from the north or west the night before and leaving towards Höfn or Mývatn the next day. Supermarkets, fuel, restaurants and accommodation are concentrated here, so you can sort out food for the car and wet clothes. Borgarfjörður Eystri: give puffin season and one long trail two nights

Borgarfjörður Eystri is appealing because it is the destination itself, not because it is on the way. Puffin season generally runs from late spring into summer. Reaching the birdwatching sites and Stórurð takes a longer drive and walk, so fitting it into one Eastfjords night usually sacrifices the return-time margin first. With two nights, arrive on day one and give the trail a full day on day two; if the weather turns, reverse the order.

Stórurð is not a roadside city attraction: trail surface, fog and fitness all change how long the outing takes. If an activity or guide offers a transfer, check whether it reaches your hotel, the meeting time and the cancellation deadline. Without a transfer, budget for parking and enough fuel for the return. Three summer patterns and where to put the nights

Changing bases is worthwhile only when you have at least two nights to work with. If the first night is in Egilsstaðir and the second in Seyðisfjörður, avoid an early departure; if puffins are the priority, go straight to Borgarfjörður Eystri and accept the extra driving on the following day. How to budget: the activity ticket is only half the answer

For two people, a half-day summer activity costs about HK$700–1,800 / NT$2,800–7,200 per person; boat trips, guides and transfers include different services. The real cost of Borgarfjörður Eystri is losing an easy substitute once you have turned onto the branch road. In heavy fog, switching to another fjord is not simple. Keep a weather fallback even from June to August

Midnight sun lets you extend a short trail into the evening, but fog, rain and crosswinds can still postpone a boat activity. Put the activity that cannot run late in the first half of the itinerary, and leave the second half for waterfalls, a town walk or supplies in Egilsstaðir. After September, daylight shortens and puffin season has ended, so a dedicated trip to Borgarfjörður Eystri becomes less compelling; Seyðisfjörður can still work as a fjord-walk base, subject to road conditions and operating days.
