Route 94's 70 km is part of the decision
Bakkagerði is the main village in Borgarfjörður eystri. Route 94 climbs across mountain ground from Egilsstaðir before dropping to the coast, and those roughly 70 kilometres take time even when the scenery is the point. With only two afternoon hours left, the return drive will eat the puffin platforms and village walk. A night lets you place the harbour, a short trail and dinner around the light.
Refuel and buy water and a proper meal in Egilsstaðir before entering the fjord. The village has a small shop, accommodation, camping, cafés and places to eat, but services are limited compared with a town or city. First-time visitors can begin with the Egilsstaðir destination hub and place their “final supplies” stop before Route 94. Then use the Eastfjords route guide to decide whether to continue south or north the following day.
Hafnarhólmi is a seasonal half-day, not a guaranteed sight
Hafnarhólmi sits at the harbour outside the village, with wooden platforms and sheltered viewing areas that work well for first-time puffin watchers. Local information places the main breeding season from mid-April to mid-August, with more birds generally present from May to August. After that, puffins return to sea. Morning and evening light is softer, and the platforms are usually easier than a midday visit.
Stay on the designated platforms while watching the birds, look out for burrow entrances underfoot and never reach towards them. To combine birdwatching with a coastal walk, visit Hafnarhólmi after arrival and leave time for a short stroll through the village. Do not wait until after seeing the puffins to decide whether to tackle a mountain trail: the two activities demand different footwear and energy.
Stórurð and Víknaslóðir need a full hiking day
About 27 day routes run around Borgarfjörður eystri, from short coastal walks to the multi-day Víknaslóðir network. Stórurð draws people to its giant boulders, colourful valley and Dyrfjöll views, but mud, wind, cloud and trail length control the return time. If you only want the mountain in one photograph, the village and Hafnarhólmi are enough. Once you commit to the hike, protect the whole day and leave a margin.
The snow line in April and May, reduced daylight after September and road conditions in October all narrow the hiking window. Keep clear-weather days for hiking; in fog, switch to the harbour, village art and a café. If you are arriving from the Mjóifjörður and Seyðisfjörður comparison, first confirm that you genuinely have an extra day. Every fjord in the east may be beautiful, but that does not make the driving time disappear.
Summer 2026 events can change bed availability overnight
Bræðslan is a summer music festival held in an old fish-oil factory. During the festival weekend, demand for rooms, restaurant tables and parking surges in Bakkagerði. The July 2026 Dyrfjallahlaupið trail race uses routes around Loðmundarfjörður, Húsavík, Breiðavík and Brúnavík; runners and support traffic change how the mountain roads function. Both events call for the same preparation: arrange accommodation early, then confirm dining and your return timing on Route 94 in advance.
Ordinary self-drive visitors do not automatically need to avoid event dates. If you enjoy live music or trail running, the event itself can justify a two-night stay. Avoid scheduling a long transfer through East Iceland after the event. Give the following day to an easy village walk or a return to Egilsstaðir for supplies, and the itinerary will feel far more manageable.

Village accommodation and dining prices fluctuate with the season and events. For planning, allow roughly ISK 3,500–6,500 per person per day for dinner—about HK$205–380 or NT$840–1,560—then add fuel for Route 94. Treat this as a budgeting yardstick and check current prices separately. The cost that most easily gets out of hand is an improvised drive out of the village for a room or food during an event weekend, so confirm accommodation, fuel and meals on the same day.

Take the detour when you can give the fjord a day
Puffin season supports a half-day; a hike or summer event earns an overnight. Without a clear job, stay on Route 1. With one, buy supplies, check Route 94 and keep a weather fallback so the village is more than a distant photograph.
To connect the east with the next stage, work backwards from the comparison of bases east of the glacier lagoon to decide how many nights you need. To separate slow coastal travel from urban supplies, continue with Djúpivogur and Seyðisfjörður.
