Protect the person who needs the most care first
Scores consider published age rules, height, shoe-size and weight limits, supervision, stamina, the difficulty of leaving midway, alternatives and cancellations. They are not a supplier guarantee.
Age is only the entry line; height, footwear, seating, supervision, stamina and same-day conditions split families.
Blue Lagoon, Silfra, glacier hikes and RIB boats have different thresholds; published rules cannot be transferred between suppliers.
EU 35 footwear and 130 cm can exclude someone before their birthday does; ask about unpublished weight rules.
Flotation aids, guardian paperwork and an RIB's seated journey may mean one adult cannot watch several directions at once.
Silfra, glacier tours and RIB trips offer fewer safe exit points once underway; the slowest participant should decide.
A group can switch to a city indoor route, traditional boat or shorter stop; record the alternative and refund route before booking.
The awkward family moment is rarely a child suddenly refusing to join. It is an adult finding "minimum height" in the confirmation email after payment. A two-year-old may keep one adult outside a pool; a RIB requiring everyone to stay seated is not the same as a traditional boat. "Family friendly" can hide the working conditions too far down the page.
Split the group into the youngest participant and the person who needs the most care. That may be an older adult who feels the cold, someone recovering from surgery or a child who needs frequent breaks. Remove unsuitable activities before changing hotels and car hire around one ticket.
Age is only one column: read these six limits

Contact the operator when the question involves height, pregnancy, heart or back conditions, mobility or staying seated. The activity equipment responsibility table separates helmets, dry suits and warm layers, but it cannot decide whether a child qualifies.
Blue Lagoon, Silfra and Sólheimajökull: compare the actual limits
Blue Lagoon: age two is allowed, but supervision does not disappear
Blue Lagoon's current safety information lists a minimum age of 2. Children aged 2 to 8 must wear flotation aids, children aged 2 to 13 need adult supervision, and one guardian may supervise no more than two children; group rules may be tighter. Arrange who helps a child leave the water, drink or wash their hair before booking.
Silfra snorkelling: the age rule removes half the plan first
DIVE.IS lists 12 as the minimum age for its Silfra snorkelling information, and guests under 18 need a guardian to sign the relevant documents. Dry-suit dressing, cold water, changing and walking beside the water are not a toddler swim. If someone is under 12, choose an activity the whole group can complete, or make Silfra a separate slot for one adult and older children. Glacier hiking: eight is the entry line
Arctic Adventures' Sólheimajökull Glacier Experience lists a minimum age of 8, a minimum EU 35 shoe size and the ability to walk about 6 km over uneven ground. Crampons and other safety equipment are supplied by the tour, but footwear must comply. Check the South Coast destination guide for driving, stops and rest bases before choosing a shorter waterfall route for anyone who cannot manage the walk.
Húsavík whale watching: boat types are not interchangeable
Gentle Giants' FAQ lists traditional boat GG1 as open to all ages and provides children's warm suits. RIB GG2 requires at least 8 years and 130 cm; people with heart or back conditions and pregnant guests are unsuitable. Both boats can be affected by sea conditions, but the seating differs: a traditional boat allows more movement, while an RIB requires guests to stay in their designated seats. North Sailing accepts young children and recommends warm clothing, a hat and gloves. With a wide age range, choose the boat from which the youngest member can leave comfortably, then look at availability.

One real map: the restriction does not stay in one city
Reykjavik and Blue Lagoon are easier for care and transport; Silfra adds a 12-year threshold and dry-suit changing at Þingvellir; Golden Circle glacier products add footwear and stamina; Vík and Jökulsárlón ice activities depend on footwear and conditions; Húsavík requires a choice between a traditional boat and an RIB.
Family activity screening: what has to work for everyone
Score five practical measures from 0 to 5: age-rule clarity, care-ratio practicality, height and shoe-size risk, difficulty of leaving midway, and whether there is a rest option after meeting the group. A higher score means it is easier to build one workable plan for everyone, not that the activity is more enjoyable.

Older children who qualify can snorkel Silfra while others follow an indoor route in Reykjavik. An RIB can become a traditional boat, with a night in Húsavík, rather than leaving one person at the hotel.
Ten questions before payment
- How old will each participant be on the activity date?
- Are height, shoe-size, weight or seating limits stated as numbers?
- How many children may one adult supervise?
- Do heart, back, pregnancy, seasickness, cold or mobility limits need approval?
- Can the child dress, reach the meeting point and keep up?
- If someone feels unwell, can they leave safely?
- Does family friendly mean different things for each product?
- Are warm suits, flotation aids, helmets, dry suits and footwear guaranteed in the right size?

Q&A | Check before departure
Is the minimum age enough?
No. Height, shoe size, weight, cold water, seated posture, stamina and adult supervision can each be separate limits. If one is unconfirmed, do not lock the family hotel.
Can a young child use an adult activity as a substitute?
Only when the product terms explicitly allow it. A managed spa, city activity and outdoor water activity have different restrictions.
