Reykjavík keeps pickup simple, but charges you in road time
Reykjavík is straightforward as a base: hotels, restaurants and activity pickup points are concentrated, so first-time visitors do not need to move rooms for one highland outing. The constraint is that Þórsmörk is not on the edge of the city. The activity first leaves the capital area, follows the South Coast and then enters the highlands. Add pickup, stops, valley walking and the return journey, and the day can run from early morning into the evening. If you plan South Coast waterfalls or an early flight the next day, that fatigue needs a place in the itinerary.
Reykjavík suits travellers who want one city base and do not want to change hotels on the other days. Confirm whether pickup reaches your hotel door, when the activity meets, and whether the return can be delayed by roads or rivers. A city departure usually includes a longer transfer section, so compare more than the activity hours alone.
Hella or Hvolsvöllur gives that daylight back
Hella and Hvolsvöllur are common mid-route bases for a South Coast road trip. If you have already driven south from Reykjavík the previous night, joining a Þórsmörk activity the next day shortens the city-road section before pickup and makes it easier to continue towards Vík or Selfoss afterwards. This overnight stop is not about moving the hotel beside the attraction; it is about aligning the route direction with your sleep.
Staying outside the city means fewer restaurants and supplies. Fill the tank, buy breakfast and confirm the pickup point when you arrive. Discovering only at night that the activity vehicle does not collect from your hotel can leave you arranging a long transfer the next day. If weather postpones the activity, Hella still works well with a South Coast road trip, giving it more flexibility than a remote highland gateway.

An activity page saying “4WD” does not mean every four-wheel-drive vehicle can use the same highland road. Check rental terms, wading limits and road notices before paying; when the conditions do not fit, a tour with a specialist vehicle is usually the clearer trade-off.
Build the night stops around the highland day
A practical self-drive sequence is to stay in Reykjavík or Hella the night before, complete Þórsmörk on the activity day, then sleep in Hella, Hvolsvöllur or Vík and put waterfalls, black-sand beaches and glacier activities on another day. Do not force a long list of South Coast stops into the same day: highland driving and time out of the vehicle cannot be reduced to adding straight-line distances between photo stops.
If you plan to stay in Vík after the activity, check the return time and the property’s dinner or check-in cut-off. Returning to Hella before driving east is more convenient for the next day’s route to Jökulsárlón. Returning to Reykjavík gives you city dinner and supplies, but creates a backtrack if you head south again the next day. Use the South Coast destination hub and one or two nights in Vík to choose your bed according to the next day’s direction.
Season and weather decide whether “day trip” holds
June to August usually brings longer daylight, more activity choices and better odds that the highlands are open, but popular dates need advance planning. In May, September and earlier periods, roads, snow, river levels and operations are less predictable; do not copy a summer itinerary into the shoulder season. If the highland road is not open, South Coast waterfalls or a Selfoss town day are sensible alternatives. A cancellation does not mean spending the whole day in the hotel.
Check road and activity information the day before departure, and keep cancellable accommodation until the plan is confirmed. Good weather does not guarantee safe river levels, and a clear city does not mean the valley has the same visibility. A professional guide earns their place through these decisions, not by driving an ordinary road faster.
Three checks before you pay
First, does the meeting point genuinely cover your hotel, rather than simply saying Reykjavík city? Second, if the activity is cancelled or postponed, can you change the accommodation and the next day’s route? Third, does the return time leave room for food, fuel and an on-time check-in? If one answer is unclear, do not let the lowest price decide.
The departure point also affects where you can stay afterwards. A late return to Reykjavík is a poor match for another activity with a strict meeting time the next morning; from Hella, you can move towards Vík or Selfoss after the valley trip and keep the South Coast for another day. If you plan to combine Þórsmörk with Seljalandsfoss, check the activity return and parking time first, or the waterfall may become just a name seen through a car window. Travellers staying in Hella can leave their luggage in the room and depart according to the guide’s arrangements, instead of carrying everything along a highland road.
Include the base difference in the activity budget. A Reykjavík day tour may include transfers, but you are also paying with a longer stretch of road time; a Hella room or drive is not necessarily the cheapest option, yet it can make the morning pickup and evening check-in less compressed. If you have only one possible activity date, list non-refundable transport, hotel and tour costs together, then calculate whether the other two remain usable if one is cancelled. That shows whether a discount saves money or simply shifts the risk to the final night.
Save the pickup point, accommodation address and alternative sights in an offline map before leaving; signal is unreliable on highland sections, and searching for information on the spot is often too late. This also lets you and your companions decide quickly whether to shorten the route.
If the hotel breakfast has not opened, pack simple food so one meal does not delay pickup.
Check the road conditions once more before departure.
When comparing options, enter the accommodation dates and activity date together. Lock in a non-refundable remote room only after the activity is successfully booked. Þórsmörk’s value is the valley itself, not filling every space in the itinerary.
