Horse riding or whale watching in Húsavík?
Choose the half-day your body and route can carry
If Mývatn is on the afternoon road, or someone in your group would rather not hand the schedule to sea conditions, riding is easier to place. Whale watching makes more sense when you are staying near the harbour and want the North Iceland day to belong to the water. Check the meeting point and the drive afterwards before you fall for the headline attraction.

Which activity leaves the afternoon usable?

Both activities sit around Húsavík; the practical difference is whether you can reach Mývatn or Akureyri on time afterwards.

Choose whale watching when the sea deserves the morning
Húsavík harbour is close to town, but “a two- to three-hour boat trip” is not the whole booking. Add check-in, warm layers, boarding, the walk back to the car and the first hot drink after landing; three to four hours can disappear before you notice. If you have driven from Akureyri or still need to reach Mývatn, that extra hour can become a late dinner and a darker final road.
Book the boat when the forecast is settled, the day has slack and you are happy to let the sea decide what you see. A wooden boat moves at a slower rhythm; an RIB gives you more wind and spray. Choose riding when you need the afternoon to stay on land
Saltvík and Lava Horses both appear in the Húsavík area, but their routes, riding levels, age limits and weight rules are not interchangeable. Beginners should ask whether the group stays at walking pace and how long the transfer to the stable takes after meeting up. At the end, allow time to change shoes, deal with wet trousers and get back to the car; Route 85 is then a simpler connection than a delayed boat return.
Riding has a different kind of payoff. You remain active and see the distance between farmland, lava fields and the bay instead of waiting for one sighting at sea. If one traveller gets seasick while another wants the afternoon for Mývatn and Húsavík geothermal stops, a land-based booking leaves more of the schedule under your control.

Weather changes both options, but in different ways
June to August gives you the daylight to put either activity in the middle of a self-drive day, but busy departures and full accommodation make last-minute changes harder. From September, colder mornings, sea wind and shifting timetables make one movable morning more useful than two paid activities on the same date. From October through April, check the sailing, stable operations and road conditions for the actual day; a summer photograph tells you nothing about a winter timetable.
From Akureyri, the drive to Húsavík is about 1½ to 2 hours, with Goðafoss either a proper stop or a place you pass.
