Visit Akureyri names Akureyri, Hauganes, Dalvík, Árskógssandur and Húsavík as North Iceland departure areas. Húsavík is roughly an hour from Akureyri by car, and Bus 79 may be useful without a car. Those facts locate the ports; they do not tell you whether moving a hotel is worth the extra morning and the drive after the boat.

Akureyri works when the boat fits around the city day
Whale Watching Akureyri lists its ticket point and pier near the HOF Cultural Centre at Oddeyrarbót 2. The Classic Big Boat takes about 2.5–3.5 hours; the Express RIB takes about 1.5–2.5 hours. The checked timetable asks Classic guests to arrive at least 15 minutes early and Express guests at least 30 minutes early. Treat those as pier requirements, then add breakfast, parking, the walk and the time you need once you are back on land.

Akureyri is the lower-friction choice when the boat is one item in a city stay. Húsavík earns the extra night when the harbour, dinner and the north-east road are the reason for the day. A reputation label cannot account for seasickness, a wet change of clothes or the drive waiting outside the ticket duration; the town that leaves you less work afterwards is the useful choice.
Húsavík makes sense when the harbour is the day's anchor
Húsavík has several operators, including North Sailing, Gentle Giants, Salka Whale Watching and Húsavík Adventures. Read the exact product for boat type, check-in, cancellation and sea-condition rules; four companies in one town do not mean four identical trips or rebooking policies.
Visit Akureyri puts the drive from Akureyri at about an hour. Use that as a town-to-town estimate, not a door-to-pier promise: checkout, fuel, parking, finding the harbour, check-in and the road after the boat all sit outside it. Without a car, ask whether Bus 79 leaves a realistic margin for the operator's required arrival. Read whether Húsavík whale watching needs an overnight stay before giving up a night, and use the arrival-day or last-day guide when the sailing is close to a flight or a fixed arrival.

Choose the harbour that leaves less work after the boat

A famous harbour is not a reason to move twice
If you have one city morning, a fixed Mývatn activity the next day or someone who needs time to recover after the boat, Húsavík's reputation may not repay a hotel move. Moving makes more sense when whale watching is the North Iceland theme, you can stay by the harbour after a cancellation, or Húsavík already lies on your route. Akureyri is the cleaner fit when the boat has to sit inside a city stay. Húsavík earns the extra night when the harbour, dinner and north-east road are the point of the day. Make that call before comparing boat length or a small price difference; neither product removes sea conditions or the need to warm up and recover after disembarking. Start with where you sleep tonight and tomorrow. Akureyri suits a city base and a westbound departure; Húsavík suits a plan that keeps whale watching, dinner and the next day's Mývatn direction in one area.
Is the shorter boat trip automatically better?
A shorter RIB may leave more of the afternoon free, but wind exposure, boarding and restrictions may be more noticeable. Compare the full time, sea conditions and what your group can comfortably handle.
Can either port guarantee whale sightings?
No. Wildlife, sea conditions and cancellations are external variables. The port choice mainly solves transport responsibility and the fallback after a cancellation.
