Húsavík whale watching: traditional boat or RIB?
Choose the ride your afternoon can absorb.
Traditional boats, RIBs and puffin trips all count as whale watching, but they spend your day differently. Compare time on the water with boarding, wind exposure and the hour after you return to Húsavík. The right choice depends on whether your afternoon is open, points towards Mývatn or ends with another fixed booking.

If you board already wondering how long it will be before you are back on land, the fastest boat may not be the right one. Húsavík’s sea conditions, hulls and trip lengths can turn the same whale-watching outing into a comfortable morning at sea or an afternoon that leaves you struggling through the next drive.

Compare speed after checking your body and afternoon plans
The scores consider time on board, check-in requirements, indoor and deck space, sea-condition limits and the route after landing; speed is not treated as an advantage for every traveller.
Traditional boats, RIBs and puffin trips solve different problems; consider your body, the duration and the afternoon route together rather than letting one speed figure decide.
Traditional boats usually offer more indoor and deck options; a RIB may be shorter but can transmit wind and swell directly to your body. No boat can guarantee that you will not feel sick.
A shorter RIB may return earlier, but you still need to allow for check-in, changing clothes, parking, the return and recovery time after the activity.
If someone gets cold easily, confirm the indoor seating, clothing sizes and what happens if layers get wet instead of judging from product photos.
Puffins are a seasonal and product-version question. An extra species can also mean more time at sea and on the return, so check the wording line by line before paying.
A sea-related change can affect Mývatn, your hotel and the rental car; a shorter sailing does not automatically make a cancelled day easier to rebuild.
The difference is not in the photos; it is in how much energy you have after landing
North Sailing’s traditional whale-watching trips are often planned around roughly three hours. Gentle Giants’ public information separates traditional boats and RIBs by duration, and a puffin trip may add more time. “Two hours” or “three hours” on a product page means time on board; you still need to add the latest check-in, warm layers, parking, the return to port and recovery before the next drive.
| What matters most | Traditional boat | RIB / speedboat | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| You get seasick and want a steadier ride | Usually offers more complete indoor and deck space, with room for a longer observation period | Responds more directly to the sea, so poor conditions may feel stronger | Steadier does not mean sickness-proof; check the day’s wind, swell and your own experience |
| You still need to reach Mývatn in the afternoon | May run longer, so work backwards from the time you need to leave | May reduce time at sea, but check-in and the return cannot be skipped | A speedboat is not a private car: delays, sea conditions and whale locations can still change the return |
| You want to include puffins | Some products list puffins as a seasonal version rather than the same trip all year | May have a dedicated version, but check age, weight and departure date | One more stop means less time for dinner, accommodation or geothermal sites |
| Someone in your group gets cold easily | Usually makes indoor breaks easier, but you still need a windproof layer | Feels windier; warmth, gloves and closed shoes cannot be left to chance | “Warm clothing provided” still leaves questions about sizes, base layers and wet-weather handling |
Do not use boat speed as a substitute for a decision about your body. First ask whether you are happy to give up a whole morning at sea. If you only want a hot meal and a quiet return to the hotel afterwards, the value of a shorter trip may be greater than the promise of seeing more.
Húsavík’s harbour should set the boat decision

Húsavík, Akureyri and Mývatn serve different roles as bases. Staying near the harbour before sailing saves a stretch of backtracking and parking. After the trip, Mývatn is the direction if you are heading east the next day. The real map below compares locations only; it is not same-day navigation and it does not treat a delayed sailing as a fixed driving time.
The points show North Iceland directions only, not navigation; confirm the sailing, sea conditions and meeting address in the departure-day notice.
Seasickness is not a test of willpower: include the hour after the boat
If boats have made you nauseous before, I would count the first hour after returning as part of the activity: can you sit down at the harbour, do you need to drive immediately, and is anyone travelling with you likely to need care? Do not look only at the ticket-price difference. If a shorter RIB leaves you unable to drive, the time saved at sea was not necessarily saved time.
- Ask about sea-condition notices: Who notifies you about cancellation, rescheduling or a boat change, and how early will that notice arrive?
- Check the meeting time: Does the latest check-in and the sailing start fit the real route from your accommodation to the harbour?
- Then check the afternoon: Will you continue to Mývatn or Goðafoss, or simply return to your room for food? Write down the answer.
When I would choose the puffin version
I would choose a puffin trip only when puffins are a main theme of your North Iceland plans, the season and product page are clear, and there is no early flight or fixed meeting the next day. Trying to “fit in a quick look” while also reaching Mývatn usually stacks two expectations onto one boat seat. If the sea changes, dinner and sleep disappear before the tick on the map does.
For anyone prone to seasickness, I would write “can we cancel the next stop after landing?” into the booking conditions rather than blaming yourself later. One person may need a hot drink and a quiet drive before feeling ready to talk again; another may feel best in the wind on deck. There is no universal answer, but these differences should be clear to everyone before payment.
The same harbour can have different meeting doors, check-in minutes and boat restrictions. A platform placing activities in one search result does not make them interchangeable. Save the product page’s departure time, latest check-in, estimated return and cancellation terms; if sea conditions change, you should not be left with only a vague confirmation email.

The fastest boat is not always the one that gets you recovered first.
If you want to watch the sea slowly, choose the version that lets your body stay present. If the afternoon has a fixed route, choose a boat that does not turn the return into a gamble. Whales will not appear on the schedule of your next stop, so leave the itinerary some room for being human.
Choose the boat type, then open the two activity products
The links below lead to checked Húsavík product pages, not platform homepages. KKday and GetYourGuide may change the sailing, boat type, meeting point, age and weight rules, cancellation terms and puffin option by date and package. Compare the same date and party size, and tell the operator what you need for seasickness, warmth and the next stop.
Still deciding where to base yourself in the north? Read whether to stay overnight for whale watching in Húsavík. If you really want a trip from the capital area, Reykjavík or Húsavík for whale watching deals with the harbour choice before comparing boat types.
Q&A | Questions to answer before departure
Do I have to choose a RIB if I get seasick?
A RIB trip may be shorter, but wind, boarding and restrictions may also be more pronounced. Decide after checking the day’s sea conditions, the boat type and what your group can physically manage.
Is a traditional boat always more comfortable?
It usually offers more indoor space, but the trip and return may take longer. If you still need to reach Mývatn or change base the next day, that time difference changes the answer.
Are puffin trips available all year?
Do not assume so. Season, product date and sea conditions are firm constraints. Confirm the formal activity page before paying, and do not build your itinerary around an option that is unavailable.
