Drangey has only one landing site, and after the boat arrives, a man-made trail climbs towards the cliffs. The guide brings together the terrain, seabirds and the legend of Grettir; the island rises nearly 200 metres and looks like a flat-topped sea stack from a distance, while the cliff edge reveals the true scale of the water. The landing hike is not compulsory: anyone who would rather avoid the steep slope can stay on the boat or at the small harbour while the rest of the group climbs. That means one person’s fitness does not have to cancel the island for everyone.
Read the price and format carefully. The 2026 activity page lists the landing hike at about 4 hours, with adults at 19,500 ISK and children aged 4–14 at 12,500 ISK; the boat-only circuit takes about 2 hours, with adults at 13,500 ISK and children at 10,000 ISK. The first price buys the landing, stories and birdlife; the second buys the view from the water with less walking. Comparing only the hourly rate misses the part of the experience you actually want.
Choose between landing and staying on the boat based on your group
Fitting Drangey into a North Iceland route
Stay in Sauðárkrókur on the boat day, so you do not have to rush to the harbour from Hofsós or Varmahlíð. After the boat returns, stay in town for lunch, supplies or the pool; only drive on to Grettislaug if you still have the energy, because doing both can make the afternoon very tight.
If you schedule Drangey before Glaumbær, visit Glaumbær and Varmahlíð the next day, giving the cultural stops and the sea activity their own time. A same-day drive from Akureyri to the harbour is possible, but count the Route 1 drive, check-in and post-trip fatigue. If Mývatn is next, a long drive after the boat is poor value.
Bird season and weather can change the experience
From 1 June through August, a regular boat commonly leaves at 09:30 each day; May and September usually require an arranged departure. The breeding season makes summer landings more rewarding for birdwatching, and it is also when accommodation fills earliest. Stronger wind and swell can cancel the trip or change it to a boat-only version. Keep Glaumbær’s indoor exhibits, Hofsós Swimming Pool and Sauðárkrókur’s town services as fallbacks, then return to the island another day. That is easier than putting your whole Ring Road day on one sailing.
Wear shoes with a secure sole and a windproof outer layer, and be comfortable with heights before landing. Seeing seabirds does not require chasing them to the cliff edge; staying on the man-made trail is enough. Anyone who skips the landing can still watch from the boat.
