The Skagafjörður pool is on Reykjaströnd. From north of Sauðárkrókur, leave Route 744 for Route 748; local tourism information groups it with Drangey, Glerhallavík and the other coastal activities. Reykhólar in the Westfjords has a different Grettislaug, with different roads and nearby sights. Put “Reykjaströnd” or “Sauðárkrókur” into your search rather than trusting the name alone.
The coastal pool is associated with Grettir the Strong, but the useful planning detail is simpler: it makes sense when this stretch of North Iceland is already on your route. Driving from Akureyri to Hofsós and then heading back north just for a soak can take the slack out of dinner and the next night’s accommodation.
Grettislaug works when the coast gets the afternoon
At the 744/748 junction, count the drive, parking, changing and return before adding a trail. The Glerhallavík bay walk starts around Reykir and includes gravel beach, so walking first and soaking afterwards is easier on muddy shoes. If the sea view is the only aim, keep the plan to a short coastal walk and the pool; a Drangey boat trip belongs on another day.
In summer, Grettislaug can sit before or after a Drangey excursion. The boat outing from Sauðárkrókur takes about four hours once sailing, landing, walking, guiding and birdwatching are included. That is already a full activity. Use the Sauðárkrókur destination page to work backwards from the harbour meeting time rather than adding the pool because the photograph looked convenient.
Hofsós is the one-hour option
Hofsós Swimming Pool is in town, close to Route 76, accommodation, food and supplies. Its view still opens across Skagafjörður towards Drangey. When you have only an hour, stronger wind, or a westbound drive the next morning, Hofsós protects the rest of the day. The two pools can also occupy separate days: rest in Hofsós first, then drive Route 748 from Sauðárkrókur; or soak on the coast and return to town for the night. Put Glaumbær and Varmahlíð on an inland day and save the coastal pool for the calmest forecast.
