Five practical signals for the Skagafjörður coast
Scores reflect pool hours, local culture, coastal walking, route position and the case for staying overnight. Calling somewhere “the most beautiful” is not evidence that an itinerary works.

Hofsós Swimming Pool sits on the slope above the sea, looking across Skagafjörður towards Drangey. The main pool is 25 × 10.5 metres and 0.8–1.8 metres deep, with water around 30–31°C and a hot tub around 38–39°C. It works well midway through a driving day: swim, look across the water, dry off and then decide whether Sauðárkrókur is still the right next stop.
In 2026, a single adult admission costs about ISK 1,400, or roughly HK$82/NT$310. Admission for children aged 7–17 is about ISK 426, or roughly HK$25/NT$95, while swimsuit and towel hire each cost about ISK 852, or roughly HK$50/NT$190. From 1 June to 23 August, the pool opens from 07:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 20:00 at weekends. Weekend hours shorten to 11:00–18:00 from 24 August to 20 September, and winter opening is divided into morning and evening sessions. If the hours do not fit, do not force an extra night into the itinerary for the pool.
The Emigration Centre gives a windy day somewhere to go
The Icelandic Emigration Centre is in Kvosin and opens from June 1 to September 1. Four exhibitions across three buildings follow Icelandic emigration to North America in the late nineteenth century, with genealogical records and library services as well. In an hour, choose the centre or the pool; trying to rush both leaves neither with enough time.
Below the pool, Staðarbjargavík has basalt formations and open coastal views. The walk is short, but the shore is highly exposed to the wind. Looking back at the pool from the shore makes its landmark status on Skagafjörður immediately clear. When waves are heavy or driving rain crosses the coast, simply shorten the stop; the emigration centre still gives you a worthwhile afternoon.

A night needs to solve dinner, fuel or the next road
Hofsós has a grocery shop, fuel, restaurants, guest accommodation and a campsite. If Route 76 is already your line, sort dinner and breakfast after arrival so you do not double back for coffee. With a wet coat or swimsuit in the car, a place to dry it and parking near the entrance can matter more than another sea-facing chair.
I would plan a night in Hofsós in this order: buy supplies after arrival, see the basalt coast in the evening, then finish with a swim. Winter pool hours are split between morning and evening, while the emigration centre mainly opens in summer, so the two may not fit into the same afternoon. Leave one for the following day or stay in Sauðárkrókur instead; either choice is calmer than chasing opening times.

Use half a day for the village; use a night for the coast
If Hofsós is already on Route 76, the pool and Emigration Centre give you enough to do. Keep a room when you want evening light, a slower Skagafjörður crossing or a proper start on the next coastal leg. A return drive from Akureyri for the pool alone spends too much of the day in the car.
To connect Hofsós with a wider North Iceland itinerary, begin with Sauðárkrókur and compare its scheduled Drangey excursions and horse culture. If you are heading north through Tröllaskagi, continue to Dalvík for whale watching and the ferry to Grímsey. For a turn towards the northwestern coast, the Vatnsnes Peninsula brings seals, tides and the following day’s exit onto one coherent route.
Hofsós is a good stop when the pool and the coast share one day’s direction. If the water is the only reason to leave Route 1, check the return drive before turning it into an overnight.
The infinity pool works best with a little unhurried time around it. Bring the practical details—opening hours, changing arrangements and the road back—into the booking decision.
Route 76 is what gives the town a wider role. A half-day beside the pool is easy; a full day needs a clear reason to follow the Skagafjörður coast rather than simply adding miles.
The harbour and coastal outlook are useful after a long drive, but local services are limited compared with Sauðárkrókur. Arrive with fuel and food when your accommodation is outside town.
Weather can make the pool feel particularly welcome, yet a windy day still affects the drive and the time you want to spend outside. Keep the itinerary short enough to return before fatigue becomes the main factor.
Hofsós makes a sensible night before a longer northern or western move when the room removes an awkward transfer. If the next morning begins with a fixed activity elsewhere, the town may be better used as a stop.
Do not assume that a scenic coastal road is a free extension of every Skagafjörður plan. Check road conditions and daylight, especially outside summer, before treating Route 76 as the main attraction.
A visit to the pool can be paired with the Museum of Transport and Communication or a short harbour walk when those opening times fit. One well-matched extra is enough; the town does not need a forced checklist.
The cleanest decision is simple: book Hofsós when it shortens the following day or gives the pool a proper place in the route. Otherwise, keep the bed in a base with more services.
