If you had only planned to wait for the ferry, a bath gives the evening a clear local focus before dinner. The Grettislaug public pool is a simpler way to unwind, especially if you would prefer not to book ahead or are travelling with children.

The nature exhibition is at Maríutröð, which also houses tourist information, coffee and handmade products. It explains how bird eggs, seals, fish and down supported earlier farming and fishing communities. Visit the shore as well and the displays gain an immediate connection to the landscape; the museum deserves more than a wet-weather slot.

Birdwatching Depends on the Tide, Not Just the Season

The shallow coastal waters near Reykhólar have a wide tidal range, while inland wetlands and ponds provide easy feeding grounds for birds. The softer light in the early morning and late afternoon suits a slow walk from the village to the shore. At low tide, distant mudflats emerge, and binoculars are often more useful than a long lens. From Stykkishólmur, Reykhólar is a practical pause between the ferry and the eastern Westfjords roads. From Hólmavík, you can stop for a swim before continuing to the southern Westfjords. If Patreksfjörður is next, sort out dinner and fuel early. If you are heading to Bíldudalur or Arnarfjörður, staying overnight after the ferry keeps two long drives off the same day.

In summer 2026, eastern cultural events and ferry schedules will concentrate demand for rooms. When your dates coincide with an event, staying in Reykhólar can spare you extra driving on ferry day. At quieter times, there is no need to change hotels solely for the seaweed bath; stop for the exhibition, pool and a meal instead.

Reykhólar runs on a very different rhythm from a city: there is no row of 24-hour restaurants near the pier, and a delayed boat does not mean dinner will still be available. Decide when to have breakfast, bathe and refuel so a change in ferry time does not leave you stranded. If high winds rule out birdwatching, switch to the exhibition and seaweed bath.
