Start with Half a Day in the Village: Sea Monsters Are a Geographic Clue, Not Decoration

Bíldudalur sits on the inner shore of Arnarfjörður and has long been called the “good-weather capital of the Westfjords.” The practical way to use that claim is as a driving cue. In clear weather, you can extend the day along the fjord’s side roads or out on the water. When low cloud or drizzle moves in, the museum and village exhibitions can still give the afternoon a clear purpose.

The Icelandic Sea Monster Museum, or Skrímslasetrið, is at Strandgata 7. Through film, text, witness accounts and interactive installations, it tells the stories associated with Arnarfjörður. Allowing about an hour keeps the visit easy to manage. Afterwards, walk around the harbour and find lunch or coffee. If you squeeze the museum into the final minutes of a long driving day, dinner arrangements are often harder to manage than expected.

The village also has the Museum of Music, or Melodies of the Past, with a collection devoted to Icelandic popular music. When both indoor attractions are open, you can cover the cultural stops first on a wet day and decide later whether to continue towards the shore. If one is closed, the harbour and old blacksmith’s workshop remain available. This combination of one main attraction and one compact exhibition fits neatly into a half-day transfer from Patreksfjörður.

To Justify a Night Here, Add a Boat Trip or the Selárdalur Valley

Beffa Tours is based in Bíldudalur and offers whale watching, sea angling, and private or semi-private boat trips in Arnarfjörður. Its published excursions state that summer departures are available on request, last about two hours, and include safety equipment, drinks and blankets. If your meeting time falls in the afternoon, staying in the village is more comfortable than driving back to Patreksfjörður that evening. When conditions are unsuitable at sea, the museum and harbour still give you a worthwhile alternative.

Head west towards Selárdalur and you will find a farming valley, beaches and Samúel Jónsson’s outdoor sculptures. This side trip needs extra driving time and works best when Bíldudalur is your base for the night, not as an afterthought following lunch. Scenery around Ketildalir depends more heavily on cloud height and wind conditions. Leave enough time to turn back, and do not mistake proximity on a map for usable travel time.

Three Exits Decide Where Your Bed Should Be

Returning east to Patreksfjörður gives you more accommodation and services, so Bíldudalur works well as a half-day cultural stop. If you are heading north on Road 60 towards Þingeyri and Dynjandi, staying in the village can remove one backtrack before visiting the waterfall the next day. Selárdalur to the west is the version where you stay specifically for the side road. If you return to Bíldudalur only after completing it, dinner and accommodation need to be settled in advance.

Winter requires a different calculation. Dynjandisheiði and Hrafnseyrarheiði are mountain-pass sections of Road 60 and close in winter. Bíldudalur is therefore unsuitable as a shortcut towards the northern Westfjords. Check the roads first, then decide whether to reroute through Patreksfjörður or divide the Westfjords into two separate stages. Long summer daylight gives boat trips and Selárdalur more flexibility. After mid-September, the museum is open less often and sailing options diminish, so the half-day village itinerary needs to carry more of the plan.
