Driving through Héðinsfjörður and hiking into the fjord are different short stops
The Héðinsfjarðargöng tunnel joins the coastal plans for Ólafsfjörður and Siglufjörður, but passing through the uninhabited Héðinsfjörður does not mean you have walked its valley. Fjallabyggð’s trail information describes an 11–12 km route from Kleifar with about 680 metres of ascent and roughly seven to eight hours on foot. If you only want to slow down in Ólafsfjörður, use the pool as a dependable finish. North Iceland tourism information lists an 8-by-25-metre pool, two hot tubs and a slide, with current hours kept by the local facility. Check opening and last admission before fitting in shopping, dinner and the room; year-round hot water does not mean a late arrival will always work.
When the Siglufjörður museum and Ólafsfjörður pool share a day, let the museum’s opening time set the order and leave space for the tunnel, parking and food. A long hike should replace one of those fixed activities. Winter walking and roads cannot be estimated from summer timings, so make the driving day about one main activity unless you are staying over.
Choose Pálshús in rain; save the highland route for a clear full day
Pálshús on Strandgata 4 gives Ólafsfjörður an indoor alternative when the harbour or valleys are unpleasant. The old house contains a natural-history museum and hosts art or music exhibitions; its main opening period is generally late spring to early autumn, often in the afternoon. Check the venue before relying on it as a rainy-day plan, because a seasonal listing is not a promise of a winter opening.
With only an hour or two in good weather, a harbour walk, lakeshore pause or swim is more sensible than rushing towards the highland route. The Héðinsfjörður trail needs roughly seven to eight hours and about 680 metres of ascent. Look at cloud, daylight, fitness and the return booking; cancel in mist or low cloud rather than trying to replace missing waymarks with a phone.
The museum and the mountain path have different seasonal windows. In winter, use the pool, a meal and short town drives, and check Múlagöng or Héðinsfjarðargöng before crossing. A tunnel being open does not make either end’s mountain route suitable, so keep an indoor fallback and a latest return time.
