First decide which side of Jökulsárlón you need

Zoom out: Jökulsárlón is not halfway between the two towns

Typical road planning puts Vík about 191 km from Jökulsárlón, with roughly 2 hours 25 minutes of driving; Höfn is about 74 km away, or roughly 58 minutes of driving. Vík to Höfn is about 257 km and roughly 3 hours 13 minutes. These figures are only a route outline: they exclude parking, wind, one-lane bridges, meals, toilets, icy roads and photo stops. Add Skaftafell, Kirkjubæjarklaustur and the glacier lagoon itself, and this can easily become a full day.

Choose Vík to finish the western section, not to bring Jökulsárlón closer

Vík is Iceland's southernmost village and one of the South Coast's most useful service points. Official tourism information places Katla glacier activities, black-sand beaches, hikes, horse riding and ziplining in this area; for a self-drive trip, the more immediate benefit is being able to finish dinner, groceries, fuel and the night's stay in one western base. After Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Dyrhólaey and Reynisfjara on the drive from Reykjavík, stopping in Vík in the afternoon is usually more sensible than chasing the eastern section.

Vík's biggest misconception is that being on the South Coast means being close to Jökulsárlón. The road distance is still about 191 km. In dry summer conditions with no stops, it takes more than two hours; in winter or strong winds, any slow section cuts into your usable lagoon time. If you have an early boat, glacier activity or a firm check-in time, staying in Vík does not remove that hard departure time.

If you have settled on Vík, the next step is not another search for the “best hotel on the South Coast”; choose by the following day's direction. Vík for one night or two deals with the number of nights first. When you reach specific properties, the comparison of Kría, Katla and Búrfell separates in-town location, parking, dinner and the next eastbound leg.

Choose Höfn as the exit after Jökulsárlón and towards the east

Höfn is the main town around Hornafjörður, and regional tourism information lists hotels, restaurants, shops, a swimming pool, museums and other visitor services. Its value is not that it is closer to every South Coast attraction than Vík; it is that you have already passed the Jökulsárlón area. You can place the glacier lagoon in the previous afternoon or the next morning, then use Höfn for dinner, supplies and sleep. If Vestrahorn, Djúpivogur or the Eastfjords is next, the route also continues without backtracking.

Höfn is still about 74 km from Jökulsárlón. An 8:00 meeting at the lagoon does not mean leaving the hotel at 7:50; winter defrosting, loading, fuelling and low visibility need extra time. If the fixed activity is actually at Skaftafell, Höfn can still send you farther west than expected. Before paying, check the meeting address on the confirmation page rather than relying on an activity title that says “South Coast”.

If southeast Iceland is already your next base, read Höfn for one night or two first. If you simply need a town hotel, continue to the named Hotel Höfn stay page; if Jökulsárlón matters more than a town dinner, the timing account for one night in Höfn after Jökulsárlón addresses the real decision more directly.

With two nights on the South Coast, one night in Vík and one farther east is often the clearest split

For a Reykjavík departure followed two nights later by the Eastfjords or the Ring Road, a first night in Vík and a second in Höfn gives the trip a clear structure: handle the western waterfalls and black sand on day one, put Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach on the main line on day two, then finish in Höfn. The trade-off is a long second day; you cannot also fit every side stop.

If day two includes a glacier hike, boat trip or ice-cave check-in, move the second night closer to the activity and decide later whether Höfn is still needed. Carrying bags one fewer time is not automatically better; if “fewer moves” creates two and a half hours of early driving, the hotel saving has simply become a road cost. Use the two-day, one-night South Coast plan and the three-day South Coast self-drive to work out how many bases your route needs.

With one night, admitting that neither base fits is more useful than forcing a choice

If you leave Reykjavík late on day one and have a Jökulsárlón activity at noon on day two, Vík turns the morning into a long approach; going straight to Höfn may make the first evening too long. In that case, accommodation around Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Skaftafell or Jökulsárlón is more logical. Before searching hotels, check the first fixed time on day two and move the previous night's base to a place that does not require a two-hour early start.

Conversely, if you have no fixed activity and only want representative scenery, either Vík or Höfn can work. Vík makes day one easier; Höfn makes day three eastbound easier. The choice should follow the direction of the whole trip, not just one night's room rate. That is why this guide does not declare a year-round winner.

The common winter mistake is treating Vík to Höfn as an after-dinner transfer

The main South Coast road is driven year-round, but “the main road is open” does not mean your timetable still works. Short daylight, crosswinds, snow, ice and poor visibility can make navigation estimates unreliable. Finishing Reynisfjara in Vík during a winter afternoon and then treating Höfn as that night's hotel leaves the most tiring drive for after dark. If the road or weather is poor, drop the eastern stay rather than chase progress to protect a booking.

Before each departure, check Umferðin road conditions and the Icelandic Met Office. A flexible cancellation policy is a route tool in winter, not an optional extra. If both nights are locked into fully non-refundable rates, a change in road conditions forces a choice between losing the room money and driving unsafely—one that should never have been built into the plan.

Dinner and supplies affect which base feels easier, but they should not override tomorrow's direction

Vík and Höfn both have real visitor services. Vík works for dinner, supplies, fuel and check-in after the western South Coast; Höfn's restaurants, shops and harbour life work well after the glacier lagoon. The practical issue is arrival time: restaurants are not open around the clock, and winter late arrivals should not assume every option is still serving. If you expect to arrive after 8 or 9 pm, confirm hotel reception, the kitchen's last order and breakfast arrangements.

With wet coats and two suitcases, “no more driving tonight” has real value. In-town accommodation in Vík simplifies the end of a black-sand beach day; in-town accommodation in Höfn simplifies dinner after Jökulsárlón and the next eastbound morning. That convenience is more likely to matter than an extra ten square metres of room.
