Choose a hotel with parking when you are heading to Mývatn or west early, travelling as a group or carrying a full car. The centre buys you one evening without the car
After several days on the ring road, the practical return from central Akureyri is simple: park the car, walk to dinner, buy breakfast and decide about tomorrow once you are back in the room. A city rest day is not “missing an attraction”; it moves your attention away from roads and parking. Travellers with older relatives, young children or little appetite for getting into a car every day can feel that saving immediately.
The centre's trade-offs are just as concrete. A hotel may not include free parking, entrances in the older streets can sit beside a slope or one-way road, and “close to the harbour” does not mean easy luggage wheels. Before booking, put the parking charge, whether a space can be reserved, the nearest entrance and breakfast hours in the same note. A photograph will not carry your luggage. Outside-town hotels: easy parking, dinner needs a plan
If you are heading for Mývatn, Goðafoss or westbound roads first thing, accommodation outside town can make the opening stretch of the drive feel straightforward. With several people, a boot already full and a winter departure before daylight, a parking space and direct access to the road may matter more than a central view. Do not equate “we need to drive” with “we must stay outside town”. Compare whether you would rather drive a few extra minutes for dinner or take one fewer turn in the morning.
The most common regret with an out-of-town hotel is discovering after arrival that there is no usable food in the evening. If breakfast starts at seven but you leave at six, that facility exists on the rate page but not in your itinerary. Before paying, check restaurant opening days, takeaway coverage, charging and winter parking. If road conditions worsen, an out-of-town base should still give you a way to stay in, rather than forcing another drive into town.
Mývatn and Húsavík are different next-day directions
Mývatn works when geothermal sites, volcanic landscapes and the Diamond Circle belong to the same stretch. Húsavík's role is the harbour and whale-watching. Both can be reached from Akureyri, but “possible” does not mean comfortable as a daily return trip. Whale tours have fixed check-in times, sea conditions and the need to leave room for food and seasickness afterwards. Mývatn can also stretch a half-day with wind, fog and parking. When one of these is the main event, staying nearer it is often the cleaner choice.
If you have only one night in the north, do not put Akureyri, Mývatn and Húsavík into one day simply because all three names fit on a map. Start with the Akureyri attraction worksheet, then choose between a city half-day, a full day around Mývatn, or leaving whale-watching to Húsavík. Accommodation should remove a fixed drive on day two, not give an overloaded list a photogenic base.

The final row matters: outside town is not automatically safer, and the centre is not automatically noisier. In heavy winter snow, one fewer trip in and out of the city may help. But if an out-of-town hotel makes you drive again for dinner, the supposed convenience has been spent on another road. Check the daily driving-time account and count driving, parking, food and rest together instead of comparing map minutes alone.
Two nights: keep one base or move east
Keeping Akureyri as your base for both nights suits a first-night city break followed by Mývatn or Goðafoss the next day. If the second night includes a Húsavík whale tour, one night in Húsavík can put check-in and post-tour fatigue closer together. Moving rooms costs luggage time and another check-in; the move is worthwhile only when the long return drive it removes costs more.
An outside-town hotel needs a dinner and parking plan
Parking is often simpler outside Akureyri, but evening movement then depends on restaurant distance, weather and whether anyone wants to get back in the car. Before booking, check dinner after arrival, whether a reservation is needed, the nearest fuel station and the actual parking conditions. If you expect to arrive late, choose a room with a clear food plan or buy breakfast and basic supplies in town. A central hotel has its own checks: parking charges, height limits and the surface between the car and the entrance. Compare the whole evening and the time needed to collect the car tomorrow, not just the room rate.

Central Akureyri suits an evening when you want to leave the car behind. An out-of-town base suits a direct departure. Mývatn and Húsavík win when they are the focus of the following day.
