Höfn works when the route does
Stay when you are heading east, need supplies or want to split the drive. For an early Skaftafell or Jökulsárlón meeting, sleep nearer the activity. If the lagoon is followed by a westbound return, compare Höfn and Vík as part of the full route. A listing that says “Höfn” still needs a real meeting address.

What does this night buy: supplies or eastbound room?
This is an editorial judgement about a base, not a hotel rating. Recheck the activity address, room type, breakfast, parking, cancellation terms and road conditions for your dates.
A harbour town has practical services such as restaurants, a supermarket and fuel. Confirm opening hours and late key collection for the property you book.
After breakfast you can continue into the Eastfjords. That advantage exists only if you really travel east; heading west turns it into a detour.
Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is about 79 km west of Höfn. An early meeting means adding that morning drive, breakfast and a weather buffer.
After the lagoon, driving back towards Vík or Reykjavík means Höfn trades dinner convenience for extra kilometres, fuel and time.
Dinner and shopping are easier than at a remote stay, but winter storms, reception cut-offs and cancellation deadlines can still change the risk.
Höfn is a transition night with a clear job, not a generic label for staying beside the glacier lagoon. Set tomorrow’s direction first, then compare the total price for the same dates and room type.
Höfn is often undervalued because people compare only the distance to the glacier lagoon and forget that accommodation can solve practical problems. After a long driving day, a hot meal, water, fuel and somewhere to deal with wet clothes can make the next departure much calmer. That only helps if you actually stay in town and your activity does not send you out early in the opposite direction. The Höfn destination page separates services from location; this article calculates what one night returns. If you already know you need a hotel in town, check Hotel Höfn’s room types, buildings and three-platform terms rather than treating an area decision as a hotel recommendation.
If you are considering an extra night for reflections at Vestrahorn, read whether Stokksnes and Vestrahorn are worth waiting for first. It is not a hotel ranking; it separates the risks around light, tide and a fixed activity the next day.
What the roughly 79 km from Jökulsárlón really means
Visit South Iceland lists Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon at about 79 km west of Höfn. That is a useful baseline because it turns “nearby” into a number you can put back into the itinerary. It does not mean a fixed one-hour drive, and it does not mean every activity ends beside the lagoon; parking, photography, boat times, wind, snow and road conditions add to the real cost. The key question is whether you must cover those 79 km again tomorrow morning.
So ask “eastbound or westbound tomorrow?” before looking at the room rate. Travelling into the Eastfjords moves your starting point forward; returning to Vík can make Höfn the farther starting point. Staying at the glacier lagoon or returning the same day follows this split. Do not let a restaurant photo decide the route for you.
| Your next morning | What Höfn provides | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Heading into the Eastfjords | Moves the Ring Road starting point east, so you do not first return to the lagoon after breakfast | Checkout, fuel, first stop and weather conditions |
| An activity at the lagoon in the morning | May work as a supplies night, but may not be the best base for check-in | Meeting address, check-in time and where the activity ends |
| Returning west after the lagoon | Offers a proper dinner and more accommodation choice | Total return distance compared with Vík and the westbound section |
| A companion needs a break | Town services make laundry, water and hot food easier to arrange | Restaurant opening day, parking and cancellable room terms |
Seafood is useful, but dinner alone may not justify the detour
Höfn’s lobster and seafood reputation can turn one night into a food pilgrimage. After eight or nine hours in the car, sitting down to eat and rehydrate can be far more comfortable than cooking instant noodles at a remote stay. Still, check whether restaurants open on your date, whether a booking is needed and whether everyone wants seafood. “There are restaurants in town” does not mean you can always walk in at any hour.
If you only want one meal, Höfn may not justify two nights. Place it as a transition night travelling west to east and the value is clear; if you then turn west again just for dinner, add fuel, time and fatigue beside the bill. That is the honest cost of a town stay.
Do not let a product label choose the meeting point
Glacier walks, ice caves and glacier-lagoon boat trips may be sold under “Höfn”, “Jökulsárlón” or “Skaftafell”, but the company address, meeting point and finish are not necessarily the same. Before paying, copy the meeting point from the voucher into your map. Note how early you must arrive, whether you drive yourself, who supplies the equipment and whether the activity returns to its starting point.
If an activity checks in at 8:30 at Skaftafell, staying in Höfn means allowing for the early drive, breakfast and a weather buffer. If an afternoon activity starts at the lagoon, a supplies night in Höfn may be reasonable. The three-base glacier-lagoon accommodation decision compares Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón and Höfn; set the meeting point before choosing the room.

Choose tomorrow's direction before tonight's dinner
You can have both, but if tomorrow begins westbound, last night’s seafood will not remove a stretch of return driving. Put the direction beside the room rate and the answer will come faster than a comparison of review scores.
When one night in Höfn earns its place
If the middle of your Ring Road trip only needs supplies, a meal, laundry or rest, and tomorrow is clearly eastbound, one night in Höfn does the job. You do not need two nights for a sense of depth; the extra night should buy shorter driving, more flexibility or an activity you genuinely want to do. Give it two nights when you want time for the Eastfjords, a harbour walk or weather buffer in the east.
When Höfn adds work instead
If the main plan is a glacier-lagoon sunrise, an early Skaftafell trail or returning to Vík after the activity, Höfn’s food advantage may not outweigh the extra morning drive. A base closer to the southeast-coast activity area is then more direct; the Jökulsárlón and Skaftafell destination page covers the next decision about trails, boat trips and seasonal activities.
Calculate the return after the activity, not just the meeting point
If an activity meets at Jökulsárlón or Skaftafell, choose the base with both the morning arrival and the post-activity direction in view. Finish times can move with weather and group arrangements. If you sleep in Höfn, check the latest arrival time, dinner service and fuel options on the way; if you stay farther west, add the drive home to the fatigue budget instead of comparing kilometres alone. Without an activity, Höfn can handle supplies and the eastbound or westbound split in one evening. A seafood detour needs a check against restaurant hours and the next day’s route.
For a late arrival in Höfn, keep fuel, shopping and the latest check-in time as three separate checks. A town that can resupply you may still have closed shops by the time you arrive, and a hotel that accepts late check-in does not promise a kitchen or restaurant after hours. If you are heading east in the morning, prepare luggage and breakfast the night before rather than spending the departure window looking for an open service.
Seven checks before paying
- Tomorrow morning, are you going east, west or back to the lagoon for check-in?
- What is the exact meeting address, and does it point in the same direction as the hotel?
- Will you need to drive the 79 km again the next day?
- Are restaurants, supermarkets, fuel and laundry available on your dates?
- Are you comparing the total price for the same room type, or only a starting price?
- If weather postpones the activity, does Höfn still give you a useful place to rest?
- Does the extra night genuinely shorten the move into the east, or only make the trip longer?
Höfn is neither a hotel zone beside the glacier lagoon nor a distant point you must automatically avoid. It is a southeast-coast town with a clear job: supplies, dinner, recovery and an eastbound transition. When those are what you need, it earns its place; when you only need to be near an activity meeting point, put the address and morning drive first.
In June to August, daylight does not mean you can extend a driving day indefinitely. From November to March, darkness and storms make 79 km feel longer. Price the stay with the season: in summer, put crowds, parking and dinner reservations first; in winter, put cancellable terms, road conditions and fatigue limits first. Höfn’s practical value is having somewhere to stop and reconsider tomorrow.

Check rooms for the same dates
These links lead to Höfn accommodation searches. Align the dates, number of guests, same room type, breakfast, parking, late-arrival arrangements and cancellation deadline before comparing the total. If your activity starts early at Skaftafell or Jökulsárlón, finish the base decision above instead of choosing a room simply because one is available.
Q&A | Ask before you leave
What kind of Ring Road route suits one night in Höfn?
It makes more sense when you are heading east, need supplies and a proper dinner, or want to break up a long driving day. If your activity starts early at Skaftafell or Jökulsárlón, compare a closer base first.
Is Höfn still worth it when returning west from the lagoon?
Count the roughly 79 km, post-activity fatigue and the next day’s return together. If you move the base east only for dinner, the added kilometres may cancel out the town’s convenience.
Is Höfn suitable for two consecutive nights?
Keep the second night only when it buys a shorter Eastfjords transfer, weather flexibility or a planned activity. There is no need to add the extra relocation cost simply for “depth”.
