It is easy to focus on the race’s most evocative feature: the midnight sun. Your choice of hotel, however, depends on the schedule. The event takes place on Thursday 24 June 2027; the minimum age is 15 for the half marathon, 12 for the 10K and unrestricted for the 5K; the start is at 21:00 and timing ends at midnight. Bibs are collected at Laugardalshöll Sports Hall on race day from 18:00–21:00. Registration includes event services, refreshments and post-race admission to Laugardalslaug. Plan your accommodation and onward journey around those times, not simply around Iceland’s bright summer nights.
First decide whether you are racing or supporting
For a runner, a missing hotel amenity usually matters less than an unnecessary transfer before the start. A companion may want dinner, photographs or a way to leave the race area with children; keeping everyone at a distant hotel until late evening can derail the schedule. Separate the needs of runners and companions before assuming that “the city centre is more convenient”.
| Your role | Time I would protect first | Check for the hotel | Plan most likely to cause regret |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half-marathon runner | At least two nights; no long tour on race day | Breakfast hours, showers, late return and flexible check-out | Changing hotels or collecting a car at 1am |
| 10K runner | One or two nights, depending on the next morning | Transport to Laugardalshöll, dinner and luggage storage | Booking dinner too far away before the 21:00 start |
| 5K / family | One night can work; keep one daytime period free | Children’s age rules, bathrooms, warm layers and the return trip | Checking only distance and not who will tire first |
| Companion | Build your own city time around the runner’s start and pool time | Whether daytime plans and the evening meeting point work independently | Leaving a companion beside the course for three hours |
A map distance is not a runner’s route back to the room
Bib collection and the start are separate stages of the evening. You can visit Laugardalshöll between 18:00–21:00 before the 21:00 start. If you stay in the city centre, daytime plans remain possible, but dinner before the race should not involve crossing the city or waiting in a long queue. If you plan to visit Laugardalslaug after finishing, a city-centre hotel offers more than a wider choice of restaurants: you need dry clothes, hot water and a straightforward way back. On the map, Laugardalshöll is the bib collection point, Laugardalur is the start and sports area, and Laugardalslaug is the post-race pool. Consider all three in relation to your hotel.
Three distances, three versions of “one night”
The half marathon and 10K are not simply longer and shorter versions of one travel plan. The official minimum ages differ, and timing ends at midnight; for a visitor, the practical question is how to leave race-day daylight for hydration, bib collection, clothing and a low-risk dinner. If a South Coast tour starts early the next morning, sleep and recovery will compete with its meeting time; a cheaper room cannot restore the hours.
| What you are running | More reasonable stay | I would keep the day for | Ask before paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5K | One night is workable; easier without an early departure | Bib collection, light city plans and an early dinner | Can everyone reach the meeting area by 21:00? |
| 10K | One or two nights; do not attach it to a long transfer | Hydration, rest, clothing and a simple dinner | Will the room still be quiet when you return? |
| Half marathon | Start with two nights and make the next day a recovery day | Only a small number of indoor or nearby plans | Do you really need an early car collection or room move? |
Keep official registration separate from activity platforms
The official organiser’s website and the Corsa registration portal are the sources checked here. There is no designated Klook, KKday or GetYourGuide product for this Midnight Sun Run. This page therefore links to official registration only, without substituting a platform homepage or another running event. The registration terms also state that purchases are generally non-refundable and cannot be deferred, although transfers are possible under specified conditions. Check these terms before paying.

After the race, compare these three hotel realities
Start with the journey back: after the pool, refreshments and a shower, will you still have to carry wet clothes while looking for dinner? Then consider the next morning. An early flight, rental-car collection, South Coast tour or hotel change can make a second night far more useful. Compare price only after checking the same dates, number of guests and similar room types for breakfast, cancellation, parking and the final total. If free parking and an easier journey back from Laugardalur matter most, the named Hotel Cabin room page gives you a concrete comparison; it covers logistics, not official race or check-in information.
Do the event date, distance and route back work for you?
Compare Reykjavík stays for the same dates
These are accommodation-search links, not race registration. Decide first whether you want the city centre, Old Harbour or a position nearer Laugardalur, then cross-check the same dates, guests, room type and cancellation terms on all three platforms.
For a 5K, one night is not careless; it treats the race as part of a city evening. For a half marathon, two nights are not excessive caution; they acknowledge that your body may need a night without another decision. The event’s appeal is its unusual timing. The hotel should make the last part of the night simpler.

Can I stay in the city centre for the Midnight Sun Run?
Yes, but calculate the journey to and from Laugardalur, bib collection and post-finish recovery separately. If you have an early flight or a long transfer the next day, accommodation near the event can remove part of the route after the crowds disperse.
Can I collect my bib on race day?
Do not assume it without checking the current notice. The FAQ lists a specified collection window, so plan against that year’s announcement; missing it can affect participation more directly than hotel distance.
Is the pool after the race worth planning?
Only if you have protected recovery time, confirmed opening arrangements and a warm route back to the room. Writing the pool into the itinerary without leaving time usually turns it into a wet rush for transport.
