This event is easy to mistake for another aurora tour. Although its name includes Northern Lights, the official guidance specifically says that the northern lights cannot be guaranteed; the event is built around lights, music, city landmarks and a non-timed night route. That distinction matters: you are booking a city experience with a defined start and finish, not putting a natural phenomenon into the timetable.
Check the date first on the official event homepage, then use the Reykjavík destination guide to decide how many nights to keep. If you also want the Winter Lights Festival that week, the Winter Lights Festival 2027 guide handles free events across the city; this page deals with registration, collecting items, running or walking, and getting back to your room afterwards. The two can overlap, but they should not share the assumption that the evening will automatically feel easy.
Separate confirmed details from details that may change
| Item | Usable for planning now | Recheck before departure | Decision it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Date | 6 February 2027; the date may still change | Official registration page, event schedule and email notices | Whether to hold cancellable city accommodation for 5–7 February |
| Event format | Approximately 4–5 km, non-timed, run or walk; the organisers describe it as an experience rather than a race | Start time, waves, evening arrangements and weather guidance | Whether everyone in your group can join and whether to leave time before and after |
| Family package | The Family/Friends package can cover four numbers; children aged eight or under may join free with a parent, but registration items are not included | 2027 price, remaining places, children’s route arrangements and collection rules | Whether four people should use the package and whether children need extra lights |
| Collection | The official preparation page lists the 66°North shop at Kringlan; parts of the page still use examples from older years | 2027 collection date, opening hours, QR code requirement and mall hours | Whether you must reach the city early and whether a central hotel makes more sense than an airport hotel |
| Aurora | The organisers clearly state that the northern lights cannot be promised | Cloud cover, roads, event notices and another night’s aurora plan | Do not treat the ticket as an aurora guarantee or cancel a refundable outdoor day because of it |
The route starts at the art museum; the landmarks explain the city layout
The route material places the start and finish at Reykjavík Art Museum (Hafnarhús), with the city centre, Hallgrímskirkja, Hljómskálagarður and City Hall marked in the surrounding area. This is not a navigational race map: road closures, weather or organiser decisions may change the route on the night. Its purpose is to show two accommodation choices early—central guests may walk back, while airport-side guests need to plan the city transfer and item collection separately.
What a registration package includes—and what it does not solve
The official registration page describes the standard Registration package as a bib number, a 66°North gift, a glowing wristband, face paint, entertainment along the route and a drink after the event. The Family/Friends package is built around four numbers and more accessories. That can work well for a first family event, but four numbers do not mean four people can arrive without preparation: every participant still needs their own details, QR code and clothing plan.
| Group situation | Decide before booking | Most likely mismatch | More dependable arrangement |
|---|---|---|---|
| One participant | Whether you are comfortable walking back alone through the city at night | Treating a non-timed event as a race with a fixed pace | Choose walkable central accommodation and save the event notice and return route |
| Two adults | Whether the runner and walker still want to return together | Splitting up on the route without agreeing a meeting point | Put an indoor meeting point near the finish in the itinerary rather than relying on a phone signal |
| Family or four friends | Whether the Family/Friends package includes the items you actually need | A child aged eight or under joins free but does not receive registration accessories | Confirm children’s lights, warm layers, short cuts and time for a shower afterwards |
| A non-participating companion | Who handles item collection and the event time | A companion wants the city-centre programme but is pulled to Kringlan with the participants | Treat collection and event night as two separate tasks instead of locking everyone to one route |
Item collection is not a small errand; it can shape half a day
The preparation page currently lists the collection point at the 66°North shop in Kringlan and asks participants to bring an electronic ticket QR code or barcode. If you are staying in central Reykjavík, that means an extra journey; if you are driving, it affects parking, shopping-centre hours and whether you leave your luggage at the hotel first. Because parts of the page still use examples from previous years, do not guess the 2027 collection window. Keep an adjustable half-day after arrival instead.
If you arrive on 5 February, whether you collect your items that evening or go straight to bed depends on the current collection window. If collection is only available during the day of the event, do not also pack the Blue Lagoon or a long South Coast drive into that half-day; the February booking order guide places fixed events, accommodation and winter roads on one timeline. The event itself is only 4–5 km; the tasks around it are more likely to overload your day.
Plan the run, an aurora tour and Winter Lights as separate evenings
| What matters most | Better-fit arrangement | Practical cost | Assumption to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| City lights, music and a family atmosphere | Northern Lights Run | Registration, collection, fixed start and finish, and warm clothing | You will definitely see the northern lights |
| A chance to see a natural phenomenon | A separate aurora tour or a reserved self-drive/rest window | Cloud, roads, the return journey and cancellation risk | The event name has arranged the weather for you |
| Several free Winter Lights events in one evening | Check that year’s Winter Lights programme and venues first | Multiple locations, changing at the pool, wind or snow, and the journey back to your room | Every event is near the art museum |
If a companion does not want to run, the event can still work as a walking version; if what you really want is an aurora, treat this as a city night rather than a substitute for a weather window. That is why I would not lock in a non-refundable aurora tour on the same evening: both plans need energy and a return journey, but they answer different questions.

These scores are not a ranking; they are a reminder that a short distance does not remove the work before and after it.

Six questions to answer before paying
- Is 6 February 2027 still confirmed on the official registration page, and has the organiser issued any update?
- Will each companion run, walk or wait in the city, and have you agreed where to meet?
- Have the collection place, time and QR code been saved to an offline device?
- Have you clarified what the Family/Friends package covers and what children aged eight or under still need?
- How much time will the return, dinner, shower and luggage organisation take?
- Does the next day’s flight, car collection or long-distance meeting allow for a winter evening that runs late?
Northern Lights Run turns a Reykjavík winter night into a city experience you can complete at an unhurried pace. It does not guarantee the aurora, take care of item collection or remove the need to plan for cold weather and the journey back to your hotel. If your itinerary already includes an evening in the city, staying for two nights after booking is more comfortable than changing hotels straight after the run. With only one night, prioritise sleep and leave the event for another trip to Iceland if necessary.
If you have decided to base yourself in Reykjavík, continue with the three-day car-free city base and keep the run, Winter Lights and indoor alternatives separate. If you are still comparing hotel areas, the city centre versus Old Harbour accommodation guide continues the same decision: which route back to your room leaves you with choices after the event ends.

Is Northern Lights Run a race or a city experience?
It is an approximately 4–5 km run or walk rather than a timed race. The practical planning concerns are registration, collection, warm clothing and getting back to your accommodation.
Do I need to stay near the art museum on the night of the event?
The official start and finish belong on your map, but you do not need to book a hotel beside the entrance. A walkable central location usually makes dinner and the return journey easier; if item collection is elsewhere, plan that trip separately.
Can I expect to see the northern lights that evening?
No. The event name is not an aurora guarantee. Visibility depends on cloud cover, darkness and solar activity, so register for the run or walk itself.
