The presentation is often compelling: a menu available only during the festival, with a guest chef from another country at the table. After reading the restaurant page, opening a hotel search feels like the obvious next step. The detail that is easiest to miss is that Food & Fun is not a ticketed event in one venue. Participating restaurants are spread across Reykjavík, and bookings are usually handled by the individual restaurant or its booking partner. You are buying a particular dinner slot, not a pass for the city.
This is different work from a Reykjavík food tour. A food tour connects several tasting stops through a fixed meeting point and walking route; Food & Fun gives one evening to one restaurant, one set menu and one booking that cannot be moved at will. One is a way to get to know the city, while the other asks you to arrange the city around dinner.
What is confirmed, and what is still a guess
Food & Fun currently offers the 2026 edition as a reference: 25 February to 1 March, guest chefs working with local restaurants and set menus at several venues. Individual 2026 restaurant pages showed an example package at 14,900 ISK, but that is not a 2027 price and does not mean every restaurant has the same portions, drinks or booking rules. Recheck the next edition's dates, participating restaurants, menus, vegetarian alternatives and booking opening time on the current pages.
| Information visible now | How to use it | What you cannot infer yet | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 February to 1 March 2026 | Treat it as a likely late-winter city window and keep it as a candidate | It is not the 2027 date | The official homepage, city calendar and that year's booking page |
| Several Reykjavík restaurants participate | Choose a city base that makes getting back easy | The restaurants are not all on one street | The address, dinner start time and last order time |
| Guest chefs and local restaurants collaborate on set menus | Choose an evening by food style and the group's interests | Last year's menu does not guarantee next year's content | Allergens, vegetarian or alcohol-free alternatives and what the package includes |
| Official partner booking channels | Check seats directly once the restaurant list is published | It is not an activity ticket from Klook, KKday or GetYourGuide | Deposit, cancellation deadline, late arrival and payment currency |
The restaurant address decides the walk home
The map below places recognisable city roles from the 2026 official participating restaurants on a real OpenStreetMap base. TIDES is on the harbour side, Apotek is near Austurstræti, Sumac is around Laugavegur and Tres Locos is at Hafnarstræti; these four points are not a 2027 programme or turn-by-turn directions. They simply show why your accommodation location becomes meaningful once the restaurant is known.
One night or two: decide what the room is buying you
| Your travel situation | Suggested arrangement | What the extra night really buys | The cost most easily missed |
|---|---|---|---|
| You already have a Reykjavík city day | Stay 1 night and choose a restaurant on the same side as the daytime route | Fits one set-menu dinner into an existing city day | The dinner slot may remove the last indoor attraction |
| You are travelling specifically for a guest chef | Stay 2 nights, book a cancellable room first and choose dinner after the menu is published | One night for the main dinner and one night as a cancellation or restaurant-change buffer | Another night of accommodation and winter daylight do not guarantee another event |
| You have only one night between Ring Road legs | Do not change the route for the festival; keep dinner as a fallback | A deletable option if the road day runs late | A fixed booking can hold back your departure the next day |
| Someone in your group has allergies, is vegetarian or does not drink | Get written confirmation from the restaurant before paying | Avoids discovering at the table that the set menu cannot be adapted | A replaceable package does not mean every course can be replaced like-for-like |
Food & Fun is unusual because the restaurant itself becomes an itinerary stop. If dinner is at TIDES, the harbour or Harpa works naturally in the same city plan; if you choose Sumac or another Laugavegur restaurant, central accommodation may make it easier for a companion to return early. The point is not to sleep beside the restaurant. It is to know who has to walk where after dinner before you pay.
The bill is only one part of a set-menu night
| Cost area | Common booking-page wording | What to check in practice | What to do when it is unclear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time | Set menu, dinner sitting | Seating time, number of courses, expected meal length and late-arrival rules | Do not place the next show in a narrow gap after dinner |
| Dietary needs | Vegetarian or dietary requirements can be accommodated | Whether each course can change, whether alcohol is included and how allergens are handled | Do not treat dinner as complete until you have written confirmation |
| Payment | Set-menu price / deposit | Service charge, drinks, taxes, payment currency, cancellation and lateness | Recalculate from the checkout page's total |
| Getting back | Restaurant in Reykjavík | Harbour, main street, wind and rain, hotel entrance and next-day meeting point | Put the final walk on the map instead of relying on the district name |
The 14,900 ISK package shown on individual 2026 pages is not necessarily the total cost: drinks, service charge, transport, getting back and breakfast the next day still exist separately. If you only want to try one guest-chef menu, one night is enough. If you also want a regular food tour, do not lock both evenings; keep one cancellable dinner option so every meal does not feel like a race to the airport.
Food & Fun or a food tour: which one fits this trip?
There is no need to rank the two experiences. If your group wants city stories while walking and eating, or it is your first time in Reykjavík and you do not want to research restaurants, a city-centre food tour arranges the meeting point, walk and tasting stops. If you are happy to give one evening to a fixed booking and care about the menu, chef and restaurant itself, Food & Fun is closer to a destination dining experience.
| What you want to control | Better-fit choice | Reason | Do not overlook |
|---|---|---|---|
| See several neighbourhoods in one go | Food tour | A fixed meeting point and walking route connect several stops | Language, meeting time and dietary requirements |
| Eat a menu available only during the festival | Food & Fun | A guest chef and local restaurant create a limited dinner together | Scarce bookings, meal length and cancellation |
| You still do not know when you will reach the hotel on arrival day | Choose a meal yourself | It avoids tying a fixed slot to a potentially delayed first night | Popular restaurants may still need advance booking |

You can hold the night before every detail is published
This card scores whether current information is enough to lock dinner into your plan, not how the restaurants taste. The 2027 date, restaurants and menus are unpublished; the lower scores reflect what can be confirmed, not the festival's quality.
When a Reykjavík city night is already in the plan, one set-menu evening has a clear role. If you are chasing the 2027 festival specifically, the date, restaurants and menu are unsettled, so do not lock a non-refundable room first.
The official Food & Fun information currently available confirms 25 February to 1 March 2026 and individual 14,900 ISK package examples; the 2027 date, participating restaurants, menus and booking opening are still unpublished.
The 2026 public restaurants can be grouped as harbour-side TIDES, Apotek on Austurstræti, Sumac around Laugavegur and Tres Locos at Hafnarstræti 4. Real locations help you choose an accommodation direction now, but the 2027 list may change.
The page can tell you to ask the restaurant about allergens, vegetarian and alcohol-free alternatives and how each course can be changed. Current official information does not give a single guarantee for every menu next season; without a written reply, the issue is not resolved.
A full city day with no early flight, car return or must-not-miss meeting makes a fixed dinner easier. A delayed first night, long drive or early gathering the next day magnifies the risks around lateness, sleep and getting back.
Scoring basis: official 2026 Food & Fun information, public restaurant locations and the dietary and next-day time boundaries stated on this page. Reassess after 2027 information is published. Cancellation policies that could not be verified from the sources are not scored separately.
The low scores do not mean you should skip the festival; they mean you should keep a recoverable city night first. Choose a cancellable room while the date and menu are unsettled, then pay for a night after the restaurant and dietary arrangements are confirmed. The more avoidable regret is not missing one guest chef; it is locking an entire Iceland itinerary around a date that does not yet exist.
Match the room to the restaurant and date
Do not choose a Food & Fun hotel on the single question of which one is closest to the restaurant. Put the final dinner, the route back afterwards, the first fixed task the next day and breakfast time on the same page before comparing the centre, Old Harbour or another city location. With one night, the centre's ability to let you change plans is usually more useful than the view; with two nights, you have room to give one evening to the festival and one to an ordinary city dinner.
Have the date, restaurant direction and route back aligned?
Compare Reykjavík rooms for the festival dates
These are accommodation-search links, not Food & Fun restaurant bookings. Filter by restaurant direction, breakfast, cancellation, parking and next-day departure position, then compare the total for the same dates, guests, room type and terms.
If the restaurant list is not published, return to the Reykjavík destination entrance and plan the number of city nights first. If you have only one night left, one or two nights in Reykjavík separates the usable time again. If you want to combine Food & Fun with a regular food tour, Winter Lights Festival or another city event, read about free Winter Lights activities and accommodation split first; “the evening is free” is not a substitute for a restaurant address and cancellation terms.

Have the 2027 Food & Fun dates been published?
As of the date checked for this article, the official sources have not provided the complete 2027 dates, restaurant list or menus. Use the 2026 edition to understand the format, but do not lock a non-refundable room against old dates.
Should you add a night specifically for Food & Fun?
If you already have a Reykjavík city night, you usually need to adjust dinner and accommodation location only. If you are travelling specifically for it, wait for the date, restaurant and dietary arrangements; otherwise the opportunity cost of that night is too high.
Can someone with allergies or dietary restrictions take part?
Get written confirmation from the actual restaurant. Do not rely on a festival homepage saying that dietary requests can be handled. Without confirmation, do not treat an alternative menu as reserved.
