The annual event takes place over the Whitsun weekend, with Icelandic documentary premieres alongside international documentaries, works in progress, guest masterclasses, food and parties involving local residents. That gives it a strong local character, but does not confirm every detail for 2027. The practical approach is to reserve accommodation for the four-day window, then shorten or extend your stay as the programme develops.

The pass has hidden costs: fish, pool and camping are part of the plan
The official festival pass says it includes the full programme, Sunday's fish feast, Saturday's plokkfiskur fish meal, parties, awards and limbo, plus swimming-pool and camping access during the festival. People without a pass may be able to buy selected meals, pool or camping access under the current rules. This matters because the festival does not end when a screening finishes: meals, conversation and parties are integral to the experience.

How many nights in Patreksfjörður depends on where you go next
If Skjaldborg is the theme of your trip, staying in Patreksfjörður is simpler than commuting from another town: films, meals, your room and supplies are all within the same local area, leaving some flexibility if an afternoon event changes. That does not mean every venue is on one street. The official 2026 programme used Skjaldborg Cinema, Félagsheimili Patreksfjarðar and Verbúðin; confirm each 2027 venue against the programme.
If you head north to Dynjandi after the event, do not schedule a long drive immediately after the awards or a party. For Látrabjarg, Rauðisandur and the south, keep the final festival day flexible and leave when the weather allows. If you have booked Baldur, first settle the Brjánslækur, Flókalundur and Patreksfjörður first-night split; Skjaldborg does not remove the driving time caused by a delayed ferry.

The festival and nature sights cannot be merged with the words “on the way”
Patreksfjörður is a good festival base, but it is not a central hub between Dynjandi, Látrabjarg and the ferry. An afternoon may include a screening or discussion, while the best weather window may fall on another day. Add a headland after every film and you are likely to rush both the festival and the sightseeing. If companions are not attending films, the pool, harbour, café and short walks give them worthwhile alternatives without forcing the whole group onto one timetable.

Six questions before departure: if you cannot answer them, do not commit to four nights
- Are you going for documentary premieres, conversations with guests or simply an atmospheric weekend?
- Does the 2027 programme list the screenings, dates and places you genuinely want?
- Will you use the pass's fish feast, parties, pool or camping, or have you paid for items you will not use?
- When arriving from Brjánslækur, Ísafjörður or the southern roads, does the room allow a late arrival and delay?
- After the final festival night, are you heading to Dynjandi, Látrabjarg, the ferry or Reykjavík?
- If May weather changes roads or events, can the accommodation be cancelled, or do you have a version that avoids a long drive?
If only the first question has a firm yes, keep Skjaldborg on a “watch if it fits” list. If the first three align and the Westfjords are already on your route, two to four nights have a practical reason.
