How should you choose a South Westfjords hotel?
Three room choices for the end of the day

If you have just read where to stay after leaving Baldur on the first night, you already know what a near-port stay and a town solve; this page brings that decision down to three named properties. I am not copying a hotel's facilities list. The useful question is harder: when ferry timing, breakfast, the car and tomorrow's sights pull in different directions, which facilities will you actually use? Ferry timetables change the usable first night. Ferjuleiðir’s listed winter schedule for 1 September to 31 December 2026 shows 15:00 departures from Stykkishólmur to Brjánslækur on Mondays and Wednesdays, 09:00 and 15:00 on Thursdays, and no scheduled Saturday sailing; Tuesday and weekend sailings depend partly on the Flatey call. Do not turn “there is a ferry” into an arrival time: choose the date, direction and vehicle status in the operator’s calendar before booking.

This changes the order in which the three properties should be compared. With a late arrival, confirm Flókalundur’s restaurant service and late check-in; with no suitable sailing, change the travel day or stay in Stykkishólmur rather than forcing the whole road into darkness. The winter timetable applies only to the listed dates, and holidays or special dates still need the operator’s calendar.

For a vehicle booking, Ferjuleiðir asks travellers with a vehicle wider than 2 metres or longer than 5 metres to add its dimensions to the booking notes. A campervan or large rental car cannot be booked safely by passenger count alone. Do not write down a fixed hotel arrival time until the vehicle details are accepted.

Start with one property worksheet: it is not about the “best” hotel

Flókalundur: best when you do not want to gamble on another stretch after landing

Hótel Flókalundur has a very specific advantage: it does not put you into Patreksfjörður's service network; it shortens the stretch after leaving Baldur that is most likely to turn into a night drive. The Visit Westfjords accommodation page lists breakfast, a restaurant and 27 single/double rooms; regional official information also lists nearby self-service fuel. For travellers who have already spent more than two hours on the ferry and whose companions only want a shower, those details will be used before a “view room”.

I would not present it as “you will definitely get dinner when you arrive late”. The restaurant and breakfast hours shown by the official Flókalundur website and the Visit Westfjords listing do not fully agree. That is the most useful checking result: ask the hotel directly for your dates instead of choosing the version that looks more convenient. The official website also currently lists the hotel's 2026 seasonal dates; do not treat a summer page as a year-round promise in the shoulder season or winter.

Patreksfjörður: how to choose between Fosshotel and Hotel West

Both are in town, but they do not solve the same problem. The official regional information for Fosshotel Westfjords clearly lists a restaurant/bar, free parking, EV charging, breakfast and 40 rooms; if the hotel is your logistics base for southern activities, avoiding one more evening spent looking for services has real value. The same official information gives a seasonal operating window, so its chain branding is not a reason to assume the same service all year.

Hotel West makes a different trade-off: its current official page lists 18 renovated rooms, breakfast, a sauna and hot tub, with room sizes of 10, 12, 15 and 18 square metres. It is closer to a “reach town and keep the evening in the room” choice. A double bed plus bunk bed in a family room has a clear benefit for four people; if there are only two of you and you leave early, do not assign imagined value to the hot tub.

With all three official pages open, I would write down four fields: latest arrival, first meal, the first fixed point tomorrow, and where you will stop if the road deteriorates. If you cannot fill those four fields, comparing room prices is beside the point. Pay particular attention to the difference between “breakfast included” and “breakfast starts”: the Fosshotel official listing supports breakfast being available; Flókalundur’s official information gives specific hours, but those hours differ across official pages; breakfast is part of Hotel West’s offer, yet you still need to ask whether an early serving is possible on your departure date.

If you need an early ferry or want to drive towards a remote headland first thing, ask whether breakfast can be served earlier or packed to take away, and whether there will be enough food the night before. A directory entry that says breakfast is available does not mean its hours fit your departure. Confirm the late-arrival process directly with the property and keep key collection and contact details offline.

Official information is enough for a first filter, but not enough to replace a real booking.
