Three half-day routes, with only one that tolerates a last-minute change
Route A · Short Keflavík town loop: It is about a 10–15 minute drive from the airport to town. Walk along the harbour and coast, eat a meal, then return to KEF. Its strength is simplicity: if the flight is delayed, reduce the plan to a coffee near the airport; poor weather is also easier to handle indoors. If this is your first visit to Iceland and you have only 6–7 hours, I would choose it and avoid the late rush back across the area.
Route B · Fixed Blue Lagoon booking: The Blue Lagoon is about 20–25 minutes from KEF. The activity itself also needs time for showering, changing, storing belongings and leaving; in practice, allow at least 2.5–3.5 hours. It works only when the booked time sits in the middle of the connection, the transfer schedule lines up and you do not need to collect and re-check checked baggage. The value of this plan is a clear time boundary, not convenience. Route C · Reykjanes coast: With a car and stable weather, drive south-west from the airport to Reykjanesviti lighthouse, the Bridge Between Continents or a black-lava coast, choosing one or two points rather than all of them. Each stop needs parking, getting out and putting on another layer, plus the drive back. In strong wind, you may not get two usable coastal photos before the weather has made the decision for you. The main risk is the spread between points: GPS minutes do not include finding the entrance or turning around.

If your bag is checked through to the next flight, confirm with the airline before leaving the connection area that you are allowed to go out; if you must collect and re-check it, recalculate from the baggage belt. KEF storage arrangements, airline connection rules and the next boarding pass are not always the same, so ask before leaving the terminal. Hand luggage makes the stop much easier: keep a jacket, charger and medication in one small bag rather than moving the whole case into a car.
A rental car is for a genuinely generous window. With only six hours, I would keep the money for a dependable return because missing the next flight costs far more than a coffee.
Another common mistake is assuming that arriving in Iceland means you must see the capital first. Reykjavík is nearly an hour from KEF, and the return can exceed two hours before city parking and walking are added. The centre suits the first or final night of a proper itinerary; it is not automatically good value as a connection outing. If the next flight is on the same ticket, confirm whether the airline transfers the bags directly; if new check-in steps are required, extend the return buffer again.
Write the weather fallback before you leave the terminal
Reykjanes wind can turn an easy-looking coast stop into an early retreat. With low visibility, steady rain or slippery roads, the lighthouse and lava coast offer less viewing value; shorten the route to Keflavík town, keeping time for a meal and coffee, rather than forcing three headlands. If the Blue Lagoon booking is fixed, check its change or cancellation terms first. Being on the peninsula is not a reason to treat an unusable ticket as a commitment.
