The useful part of “city centre” is the walk back after dinner

The official address is Laugavegur 34, on one of Reykjavik's most visited stretches. If your city day includes Hallgrímskirkja, Skólavörðustígur, the shops on Laugavegur and dinner, the route naturally makes a loop. One person can return for a jacket while another keeps browsing, without arranging another ride to meet up. Icelandic weather is very good at making “just walk for fifteen minutes after eating” suddenly less appealing. Having the room on the walking route matters more than whether the lobby chairs photograph well.

But “city centre” covers a wide area. If whale-watching from the Old Harbour is the main plan for day two, the harbour edge may be more direct; Reykjavik city centre or the harbour separates those two kinds of evening. Sand Hotel's advantage is concentrated on the Laugavegur side, so it does not automatically suit every Reykjavik itinerary.

For early tours, check the named pickup stop

Reykjavik's city centre has designated drop-off and pickup points for tour coaches, and the city currently lists 14 city-centre coach stops. Tour-coach stops are not the same system as the yellow and blue Strætó city-bus stops. Reykjavík Excursions also advises travellers to choose a stop from the product's pickup list when booking: some hotels offer door-to-door pickup, while city-centre hotels often require a walk to a designated stop.

Sand Hotel is assigned to Bus Stop 6 (Safnahúsið / Culture House) on some current pickup lists, but another operator or product may name a different location. The booking confirmation is the final answer. The practical move is not to memorise a stop number; before paying, save a screenshot with the four essentials: product name, date, pickup time and stop name. Discovering at dawn that you have been looking for a city-bus stop makes those minutes disappear quickly.

Parking can put this hotel on the wrong side of your route

Sand Hotel's official location page does not present parking as a free perk. It states plainly that the historic district has narrower roads, with paid street spaces using parking meters or multi-storey car parks charged by the hour nearby. For drivers, the comparison is not simply “does the hotel have parking?” It is whether you can unload first, which paid zone will hold the car, when charges begin the next morning, and whether collecting the car puts you in the right direction for leaving town.

If you are heading to the Golden Circle or South Coast early the next day, staying on the core shopping street may not be faster than staying east or farther out. The ten minutes saved after dinner may return the next morning while you find the car, load luggage and leave a narrow street. There is no fixed answer, but you can calculate it. If two platforms differ slightly in price, first check that both include breakfast, have the same cancellation terms, show the same room type and cover the same number of guests. Placing a non-refundable room beside a flexible room and calling one cheaper usually reveals the answer only when the itinerary changes.

Look at the early-tour pickup time as well. If you have already left before breakfast starts, “included” is only a line on the booking; if you can sit down and finish before walking out, the difference matters more for two people staying two nights. The hotel website describes a buffet with juice, bread, pastries and savoury options, but serving hours, special-diet arrangements and takeaway availability may change. Asking the hotel after booking is more reliable than inferring from old reviews.

Room names matter more than the hero photograph

The official description presents the rooms as a retreat from the activity of the main street, but that does not mean every room is equally quiet. A street-facing room, courtyard-facing room, higher floor, connecting room or room near the lift can produce entirely different nights. If you are sensitive to sound, a booking note can express a preference, but a preference is not a guarantee; the dependable details remain the room type stated on the booking and the hotel's written reply.

For a two-night stay, I would not pay much extra for the possibility of a partial view, especially when the days are full. The difference is usually better spent on a cancellable rate, which fits an Iceland itinerary more sensibly. If there are three adults, children or a need for separate beds, check the occupancy and bed type listed for the room rather than guessing from the full-room photograph whether a sofa bed exists. Photos are good at creating atmosphere; fire regulations are less romantic.

Who gets the most from this address?

If you have read this far and can only say “I want a good hotel,” do not pay yet. Write down the first fixed time and last fixed location for each day: pickup stop, dinner area, car collection or car return. If Sand Hotel sits between those two points, its location premium may be worth considering; if every day sends you the other way, it is simply a beautiful hotel in the wrong place.
