Reykjanes Peninsula One-Day Drive: How to Link Blue Lagoon, Geothermal Areas, the Lighthouse and the Airport

Reykjanes can fit into one day when one main activity carries the route. Use Blue Lagoon as the anchor, then add one geothermal area or one headland stop. If the airport is your endpoint, keep the final stop on the Keflavík side and leave time for refuelling, returning the car and checking in. Blue Lagoon, two geothermal areas, a volcano trail and the lighthouse may look complete on a map, but the real day is often spent finding parking and walking between stops.

Make one choice first: The most workable one-day Reykjanes drive is Keflavík Airport or a Reykjanes base → choose either Blue Lagoon or Seltún as the main stop → keep either Gunnuhver or Reykjanesviti for a short visit → return to the airport or Reykjavík. In dry road conditions, driving takes about 2.5–3.5 hours; with parking, walking, food and bathing, allow 8–10 hours. If you are leaving Reykjavík for a departing flight, do not make the peninsula's farthest point your last stop.

How workable is a one-day peninsula route?

This rates timing and fallback options, not landmark fame.

★One-day link-up8.1/10

The sights are spread across the peninsula, but the main route is clear; choose only one distant stop.

◷Time efficiency6.5/10

A short drive is not a short outing: bathing, changing and walking through geothermal sites all take fixed time.

☁Wind sensitivity8.8/10

The headlands and lava fields offer little shelter, so wind can change how long you want to stay outside.

↗Airport fit8.6/10

Staying on the peninsula's east side can shorten the final drive back towards the airport.

Which day suits this route?

The easiest version is a full daylight window after arrival, or a departure day with an evening flight and a confirmed car-return plan. After landing on the first flight, collect the car, buy water and simple food, then drive south across the peninsula; put the first main activity in the morning and decide in the afternoon whether to add a headland. On a departure day, reverse the order: see the farthest sight in the morning, then work back towards Keflavík after lunch. Do not spend the final minutes being battered by wind at Gunnuhver before remembering the fuel gauge.

If you are starting in Reykjavík, read the Keflavík and Reykjanes destination page first, because the decision is also where to sleep tonight: near the airport, near Blue Lagoon or back in the city centre. With only three to four hours after arrival, use the short version of Blue Lagoon on arrival or departure day rather than forcing a full peninsula circuit.

Read the map, then reduce five locations to three

Keflavík Airport is in the peninsula's northwest, Blue Lagoon sits towards the central east, Seltún is inland near the south coast, and Gunnuhver with Reykjanesviti lighthouse lie on the southwestern headland. These places do not form one straight coastal line; Route 41, Route 43, Route 42 and the headland roads run in different directions, and snow or strong wind means the minutes shown on a map are never a guarantee. The map below shows the actual orientation so you can decide what to drop before setting out.

Three versions: choose one main activity

Headland routeGunnuhver → Reykjanesviti lighthouse → airport / accommodation4–6 hoursYour flight is late and you want coast and geothermal steam

For the Blue Lagoon version, work backwards from the entry time. For a 14:00 entry, put car collection, food, luggage and the drive first, with roughly 30–45 minutes of flexibility; after bathing, add only one stop that does not involve a queue. Do not treat Seltún as a fifteen-minute extra: the boardwalk has changes in level, and wet ground, photography and changing outer layers all take time.

The Seltún version is more flexible, with about 30–60 minutes for the short stop. You can allow another 20–40 minutes at Gunnuhver for the steam and mud pools, but stay behind the barriers. It suits an arrival day that still has daylight and travellers who do not want a fixed ticket as their first commitment. If you want a soak, compare Blue Lagoon and Sky Lagoon for the return journey, then decide whether a timed booking deserves space in the route.

The headland version gives a strong visual payoff but is most exposed to wind. There are no large visitor facilities around the lighthouse, and a gusty day can make a long stop uncomfortable; treat it as a 15–30-minute photo stop so one headland does not consume the afternoon. Before driving from the headland to KEF, refuel and then begin the return-car process. Do not leave finding a fuel station until you are near the airport.

Count door-to-door time, not only driving

From KEF to Blue Lagoon, the driving time on a map covers only time with the wheels turning; add the rental desk, luggage, familiarising yourself with the car, setting the navigation and parking. Reykjavík to Blue Lagoon needs the city exit and return counted separately. If you still need to reach the airport, do not fold that round trip into the same clock as a city-centre stay. Blue Lagoon to Seltún links by direction, but it is a transfer across inland roads, not the next space beside one car park.

A useful calculation splits every stop into four parts: reach the parking space, walk to the viewpoint, do the main activity and return to the car. Write in at least 30 minutes before Blue Lagoon entry and the changing time; allow 45 minutes each at Seltún and Gunnuhver, 30 minutes for a headland stop, then add lunch and a weather buffer. If the plan already exceeds nine hours, remove one location instead of trying to recover the time by starting earlier.

Seasonal conditions can reverse the most workable direction

From May to August, long daylight lets you leave the headland and geothermal areas later, but it does not double the road quality, wind or your energy. From September to April, check wind speed, snowfall, sunrise, sunset and road conditions first; on short-daylight dates, place the main activity around midday and add the headland only if there is still light on the return. In winter, crosswinds or wet snow can make both the Seltún boardwalk and the headland poor choices for a box-ticking stop. Blue Lagoon also needs time to leave after changing.

If volcanic activity changes access to roads or trails, follow the roads and sites open that day. The Fagradalsfjall volcano itinerary needs a full half-day and cannot share the same spare window as Blue Lagoon, Seltún and the headland. A trail being open does not make it suitable to insert today: parking, walking and the return plan are much more demanding than a short geothermal stop.

Your accommodation can remove one stretch of road

For an early flight, Keflavík is more practical than Reykjavík: you exchange the final city's dinner for a short drive and easier refuelling. Filter the Keflavík Airport accommodation options by car-return time and breakfast arrangements; if you plan to rest immediately after Blue Lagoon, one night near Blue Lagoon removes the long transfer after bathing.

Accommodation on the western side of the peninsula suits an arrival day when you want to collect the car and rest before exploring the south coast the next day. Reykjavík offers more restaurant choice, but you must recalculate the return to the city and the later airport direction. For two people, use about 18,000–35,000 ISK per night (approximately HK$1,050–2,050 / NT$4,300–8,400) as an initial budget for a standard room. Blue Lagoon and peak flight dates may cost more; this is a planning range, and the actual price changes with the date, room type and cancellation terms.

ICENAVI · REYKJANES DAY DECISION

Give the day one main activity, and the return will stay manageable.

If Blue Lagoon has a fixed entry time, make the geothermal areas and headland fit around it. Without a timed ticket, Seltún plus Gunnuhver gives you a more flexible peninsula day. On a departure day, write fuel, returning the car and organising luggage into the timeline whichever version you choose.

Q&A · One-day self-drive on the Reykjanes Peninsula

How many sights can I visit in Reykjanes in one day?

One main activity plus one or two short stops is the safest plan. Blue Lagoon, Seltún, Gunnuhver, the lighthouse and the volcano trail do not belong in one day together.

Can I visit Blue Lagoon and Seltún on the same day?

Yes, but treat Blue Lagoon as the timed commitment and add Seltún only when there is a real gap before or after entry. Leave a weather buffer between every stop.

Is Reykjanes suitable on a departure day?

Consider it when the flight is in the evening or later and the rental-car and refuelling process has already been worked backwards. For an early flight, stay in Keflavík and shorten the outdoor stops.

Can the volcano trail replace a short headland stop?

No. A volcano trail needs longer walking and a complete return plan, so calculate it as a separate activity.
