Boreal is an international screendance festival that began in 2020. In 2026 it runs from October 23 to November 8 around Listagil in Akureyri, with venues including the art museum, Deiglan and Mjólkurbúðin Gallery. The current activity window is roughly 12:00–17:00 and admission is free, with exhibitions, dance and film. These are the festival dates and activity window, not a promise that the same work or opening hours will apply every day.

Treat it as a weather-day option, not a must-see checkbox
The value of a screendance festival is not measured by whether you can “complete” three venues in one day. You may spend ten minutes in one gallery, or stay because a work holds your attention and move the next waterfall to tomorrow. This kind of event rewards room in the schedule; it does not suit a sightseeing list chased at full speed.

Three venues do not mean three boxes to tick
Boreal's venues are concentrated around Listagil: Akureyri Art Museum, Gallery Deiglan and Mjólkurbúðin Gallery. They sit in the same arts district, but the work may use screens, walls or spatial installations. Do not turn three map points into “done in an hour”. Allow for viewing pace, time outside, coats and an afternoon that may invite you to stop unexpectedly.
The real question this map answers is “where can you stay without restarting the drive each day?”, not an exact walking-time calculation. From a city-centre base, you can visit one venue in the afternoon, return for dinner and decide whether to see a second after checking the day's programme. An out-of-town hotel may not add much driving in good conditions, but in wind and rain every trip back to the car for a coat takes some ease out of the festival. The festival window is long; the actual programme may be short
The 2026 activity window runs from October 23 to November 8, which looks much broader than a single weekend. At present, What's On shows activity types and times, but that does not necessarily mean every day's work, venue and opening arrangement has been published. This is where Boreal differs from a conventional performance festival, and where travellers can misread the dates: a long exhibition period does not guarantee the same content when you arrive.

These scores assess the itinerary, not the artistic quality: whether there is a real indoor fallback, whether the venues can form a city day, how settled the programme is, how well it connects to a North Iceland route, and whether a special detour costs a night. Boreal scores 9/10 as a rainy-day fallback because of its indoor venues and long window; the 4/10 detour score reflects the chance that you still will not see a complete programme on one day.
Half a day, one night or two: do not let the festival dates choose for you
The half-day version suits travellers already in Akureyri, travellers whose weather has changed, or anyone wanting an indoor pause before Lake Mývatn. Pick one venue confirmed open that day, then leave room for coffee, supplies and the next day's drive. That is when the event adds value.
One night gives you a fuller shape: visit one or two venues in the afternoon, return after dinner, then choose the next day between Lake Mývatn, Húsavík or the west according to the weather. If one companion is not interested in dance, Akureyri's museums, pool and city-centre workspaces allow the group to split up and meet again. Two nights suit people who genuinely want to take their time with the exhibitions or use Akureyri as a North Iceland base. Do not treat two nights as insurance simply because the festival window has many dates. If the formal programme is not published, keep the second night cancellable rather than locking yourself into an expensive non-refundable rate. A!, Eyrarrokk and Boreal answer different trip questions
A! Performance Festival on October 8–11 is free, uses multiple venues and offers performance windows. Eyrarrokk on October 22–23 is paid, takes place at one venue and brings six bands each night. Boreal runs from October 23 to November 8 and centres on screendance and gallery viewing. All three are in Akureyri, but they answer different questions about performance sessions, ticketing and a rainy-day city afternoon during a longer exhibition period; they are not interchangeable.
Six questions to answer before you leave
- Which date and which venue do you want to see, rather than only knowing the festival window?
- Does the day's activity card list the work, time and entry method?
- If the weather is good, would you rather give the afternoon to Lake Mývatn or another outdoor plan?
- Does anyone travelling with you need a separate indoor meeting point instead of watching everything together?
- If you only spend half a day there, do your accommodation and next-day direction still make sense?
- Will your plan still work if the programme update is delayed?
If the answer to question six is no, do not buy two non-refundable nights for Boreal yet. Keep it as an adjustable indoor layer in your North Iceland plan until the current information is sufficient. If you are already in Akureyri, that flexibility is useful in its own right.

Q&A | What to clarify before departure
Is Boreal worth travelling north for on its own?
If you are already heading to Akureyri and need an indoor half-day in poor weather, it has a stronger case. If it requires extra flights, nights and a long drive for a programme that is not fully published, do not make it the main route.
Will the spread of venues affect where we stay?
It can. Check the current works and locations before deciding whether a walkable city-centre stay saves more time than a cheaper room outside town. While the programme is unsettled, a cancellable room is the more sensible position.
