Höfn harbour to Jökulsárlón is roughly 80 km along Route 1, normally about 60–75 minutes by private car. In winter, allow a cautious 90 minutes to two hours for ice, crosswinds or a convoy. A map does not answer the practical question: how do you get from the stop to the boat operator’s meeting point? The lagoon stop, Diamond Beach car park and accommodation are spread across Breiðamerkursandur, and walking along a gravel-edged road with 20–23 kg of luggage is a poor fallback.

These prices are budgeting ranges, not fixed quotes. In July and August, around Easter and over New Year, vehicle and room availability tightens first; from September to April, wind, ice and short daylight increase the time cost. Even when public transport offers a suitable outbound service, it may not connect with the end of the boat tour, dinner and getting back to your room.
Work backwards from the activity, not forwards from the bus timetable
Boat tours usually require check-in 20–30 minutes early. Kayaking also involves changing and a safety briefing, so the activity can take three to four hours in practice. If check-in is at 10:00, write down the transfer, breakfast and luggage handover around 08:00; budgeting only the one-hour navigation time leaves no room for snow or wind. For a car-free booking, ask about each detail: does pick-up reach your Höfn hotel, is luggage accepted, can the return drop you near Jökulsárlón, can a cancellation move to the next day, and is food available after the activity? “Transfer available” does not necessarily mean that a transfer is included. Get the meeting address, the latest confirmation time and the price per person or vehicle. If wind cancels the boat tour, Diamond Beach may be only a short stop, while the accommodation still needs to remain recoverable for one night.
Should you stay in Höfn or near Jökulsárlón?
Höfn has supermarkets, fuel, restaurants and more complete reception services, making it useful after arriving from the east, doing laundry or reorganising luggage. Hotel Höfn is a reference point for a town base and breakfast; if you choose it, ask the transfer tour to collect you there and include breakfast opening time in the countdown to departure. Accommodation near Jökulsárlón is better placed for early light, boat tours and next-day Skaftafell activities, but dining is limited, prices are higher and some properties still need a connection from the road stop. What the season, road and luggage really change
June to August brings long daylight, making a Höfn departure, lagoon stop and return easier to arrange; still allow for a delayed transfer, because long daylight is not a substitute for a timetable. September and October can bring the northern lights and softer room prices, but boat-tour operating days decrease and there are fewer alternatives when an activity is cancelled. Pack an “activity-day bag”: leave the main case at the original accommodation and take only dry layers, a waterproof outer layer, gloves, a charger and medication in the transfer vehicle. If you are changing accommodation, confirm that the vehicle can take a hard-shell case, then write checkout, storage, transfer and check-in times in one note. There is no full shop near Jökulsárlón for an easy last-minute restock, so deal with water, lunch and wind protection in Höfn.
Final decision table: when should you abandon the same-day return?
- Your activity check-in is before 10:00 and the transfer has not been confirmed the previous evening: stay beside the lagoon.
- The forecast warns of strong wind, ice or a road closure: keep a cancellable Höfn room and do not stake the return on the last service.
- You are only seeing the landscape and have no fixed activity: consecutive nights in Höfn provide a supply and dining fallback.
- You have a Skaftafell glacier hike the next day: stay in the South-East the previous night and remove one cross-region transfer.
- Your large luggage exceeds the activity provider’s limit: use a private transfer or split the stay into two bases.

Is there a direct bus?
Operating days and stops change. Check Strætó or the current provider page first, then ask the activity company whether it accepts drop-off at that stop. Do not estimate the walk from the stop to the meeting address from a map alone.
Can I stay in Höfn and take a boat tour the same day?
It can work if the activity provides hotel pick-up, the outbound and return journeys are confirmed in writing, and the weather has some buffer. In winter or for an early check-in, staying near Jökulsárlón is more dependable.
What should I do with large luggage?
Ask about luggage dimensions before booking. The safest option is to leave the main case at the hotel and carry an activity bag, or buy a private transfer that explicitly confirms luggage space.

Forty-eight hours before departure, save the activity confirmation, hotel address, transfer meeting address, driver’s phone number and road screenshots offline. Signal around Jökulsárlón varies with location, weather and carrier, so do not assume you can find a map at the last minute.
