FlyOver is easy to mistake for a very large film. The product description is more specific: guests sit in suspended seats with their feet off the floor, facing a 20-metre spherical screen; wind, mist, scent, music and seat movement work with the footage to create the feeling of flying across Iceland. The flight itself lasts about 8.5 minutes, but the complete experience takes about 35 minutes and includes two pre-show sections plus a safety briefing. That distinction matters. If you put only “8.5 minutes” into a city itinerary, the next boat, dinner or transfer can look much closer than it really is.
Choose between an Iceland flight and a compact volcanic story
FlyOver’s pre-show is not empty queueing time. It includes a Viking longhouse story and the Well of Time, linking mythology, glaciers, volcanoes, people and “Þetta reddast”. Its purpose is to bring the audience into Iceland before the spherical screen sends the landscape past in one fast, continuous sequence. You will not get a walking route here, and you will not actually stand on a glacier; in return, you can see a broad sweep of Iceland without crossing the city or waiting for clear weather.
Volcano Express has a narrower brief: a volcanic theme at Harpa K2, a motion-seat sequence of about 10 minutes and a self-guided pre-show area. It works more like a short segment you can insert before dinner or a performance around the Old Harbour. FlyOver asks you to make Grandi a deliberate stop in exchange for a fuller build-up, flight and sensory effect. If Harpa is already in your plan, the travel involved is quite different.
| What this part of your day needs to do | Better match | Time I would allow | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compress Iceland’s big landscapes, while someone in the group does not want a long outdoor walk | FlyOver Iceland | About 60–90 minutes, including 15 minutes early, standing and leaving | It is a sensory simulation, not a viewpoint or helicopter flight |
| Already at Harpa with one short gap | Volcano Express | About 45–75 minutes | A session every 15–20 minutes does not make entry, storage and the restroom take zero time |
| Fit an ice cave, glacier, volcano and viewpoint into one half-day | Perlan | About 3–4 hours | It offers more information and may be too much for one spare rainy-hour slot |
| Experience the real landscape when the weather is worth waiting for | Keep the time for the coast or an outdoor route | Depends on wind, rain and walking pace | A free city walk may suit how you feel better than a paid experience that day |
FlyOver is in Grandi; the location is part of the decision
FlyOver Iceland is at Fiskislóð 43 in the Grandi area, not at Harpa and not at the Old Harbour whale-watching pier itself. The area works well with the harbour, restaurants and a city walk, but it is a poor place to treat every stop as “just five minutes away”. On a windy day, the feel of the waterfront and the actual walk matter more than a straight line on a map. Use the map below only to judge the city geography: first see whether FlyOver, Harpa, the Old Harbour and Laugavegur genuinely belong in the same afternoon.
Thirty-five minutes is not the whole appointment
Ticketing terms require arrival 15 minutes before the booked time. The FAQ also says the full experience involves about 20–30 minutes of standing, as well as stairs. So for a 13:00 session, the usable window is not 13:00–13:35. You need to arrive, find the entrance and complete the pre-show before the 8.5-minute flight; after leaving, the walk back to a station, restaurant or meeting point determines whether you can make your next commitment. This is the version I would put in an itinerary: an editorial allowance, not a venue guarantee.
Check the physical experience before you check out
Children must be at least 100 centimetres tall; anyone aged 13 or under must be accompanied by an adult or guardian aged 14 or over. The FAQ says there is no weight limit and that the seat size is similar to an aircraft seat. However, anyone with motion sickness, a fear of heights, neck or back pain, heart disease, photosensitive epilepsy or pregnancy should not treat “indoors” as a safety guarantee. Wheelchair users can contact the venue in advance; to use the motion seat, you must be able to transfer independently or with help from your companion. Otherwise, some content can be viewed from a fixed position.
| Group situation | How I would assess it | Confirm before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Under 100 centimetres tall | Cannot take part in the motion flight; an accompanying adult does not override the height requirement | Do not rely on a family ticket; check the height threshold first |
| Prone to motion sickness or afraid of heights | The activity information describes gentle movement but also acknowledges that a small number of people may feel unwell | Is there a non-flight viewing alternative, and is the risk acceptable? |
| Cannot stand for long or use stairs | Tell the Flight Guide in advance so the venue can assess a folding seat, fewer stairs or lift access | Do not wait until the entrance to tell a companion for the first time that standing is involved |
| Pregnancy, photosensitive epilepsy, or neck, back or heart problems | General family positioning is not personal medical advice | Read the FAQ, contact the venue and consider your medical needs; skip the ride if necessary |
Compare the full afternoon, not only the ticket
Online adult tickets (age 14 and over) are 5,690 ISK and children’s tickets (age 13 and under) are 3,690 ISK; on-the-day tickets are 6,250 and 4,250 ISK respectively. Online booking is cheaper and also reserves a seat, reducing the uncertainty of the queue. The Premium Package is listed at 7,990 ISK for adults and 5,990 ISK for children, including a drink, priority boarding, a digital photo and a gift-shop discount. If you only want the standard flight experience, the upgrade may make less sense than keeping the difference for transport.
The venue currently lists opening hours of 09:00–18:30 daily, with flights starting about every 15–20 minutes; cash is not accepted, but major credit cards are. Prices, available sessions, currencies and packages can change. Treat this as a comparison framework, not a substitute for the payment page.
These scores do not rate how thrilling it is. They check how useful it is for your particular city day.
| Dimension | Score | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Rain-day reliability | 9/10 | Indoors and operating daily, but the trip to Grandi still involves wind, rain and transport costs |
| Time efficiency | 7/10 | The flight is only 8.5 minutes, but the full visit requires early arrival, standing and time to leave |
| Content density | 8/10 | The pre-show story and spherical-screen flight form one sequence, not just a short film |
| Physical predictability | 6/10 | The activity information calls the movement gentle, but height, motion, wind, mist, scent and standing all count |
| Route fit | 8/10 | Works well if the Old Harbour or Grandi is already planned; much less so if you cross the city solely for it |
Four city-day situations, four sensible choices
Arriving with only half a day. If luggage, a rental car or an airport transfer is not settled, I would not make FlyOver the first timed stop after landing. Even with a 35-minute experience, missing a transfer or hotel check-in window costs more than the ticket difference. Settle in first, then see whether a full 60–90 minutes remains.
A rainy city day when you are staying in the centre. If you are willing to go to the Old Harbour and Grandi, FlyOver can give the afternoon a clear indoor anchor. Do not also force in Perlan; both venues need attention, and you may remember only the rushing between them. If dinner follows, check the return direction on the map rather than judging the distance between two pins.
You already have a ticket for a show at Harpa. I would look at Volcano Express first. Harpa makes the surrounding 45–75 minutes easier to control; FlyOver only works if you are willing to make Grandi the main destination for that part of the afternoon. Otherwise, the buffer before the show becomes too narrow.
Someone in the group is afraid of heights, prone to motion sickness or unable to stand for long. Do not decide by vote on what “most people want”. Ask the person most likely to feel unwell whether the pre-show, standing, stairs and suspended seat are acceptable. If the answer is uncertain, a walk around the Old Harbour or a quieter cultural stop may make the whole day work better.
Choose the ticket source after you settle the route
The clearest current FlyOver Iceland entry points are the official prices-and-hours page and the FAQ. This article does not treat search results from Klook, KKday, Trip.com or GetYourGuide as an activity product. If a named product later matches the specific experience, date and cancellation terms, it can be compared separately. For now, book through the clearly identified payment page and check the supplier’s own rules.
Certain you want to reserve time for Grandi?
Check prices, sessions and physical requirements first
Confirm the day’s availability, online and on-the-day prices, the 100-centimetre height threshold, change policy and 15-minute early-arrival requirement before paying.
If the activity fits, the next question is where to stay. FlyOver in Grandi, Harpa and Laugavegur each produce a different journey back to your hotel; city hotels are not interchangeable once your evening route is taken into account. Start with the Reykjavík city guide, then compare three platforms for the same date and a similar room, breakfast, parking and cancellation terms based on where your evening ends.

ICENAVI’s final call: FlyOver Iceland earns its place when you already have an afternoon that can move towards Grandi and want to compress Iceland’s landscapes, mythology and the sensation of flight into about an hour indoors. If you are at Harpa and need a short, manageable volcanic experience, choose Volcano Express. If you want natural history and exhibition depth, give Perlan half a day. If a companion is uncomfortable with standing or motion seats, a free harbour walk may be the more considerate choice.

Does FlyOver take only 8.5 minutes from start to finish?
No. The flight section lasts about 8.5 minutes, the complete experience takes about 35 minutes, and you must arrive early for the booked time. Your full time allowance should include the walk to the venue, time to leave and the journey to your next reservation, not only the 8.5-minute flight.
Can I still do either one when it rains?
Indoor activities are less weather-sensitive, but transport, session times, seat availability and change policies still constrain the plan. Rain makes an indoor activity more convenient; it does not guarantee a seat. Check the day’s sessions, then choose based on FlyOver being in Grandi and Volcano Express being at Harpa.
What should I do if I am afraid of heights or prone to motion sickness?
The FlyOver FAQ covers the suspended seats, standing, stairs, motion sickness and fear of heights. Read these physical requirements before paying. An article cannot tell you how Volcano Express will feel either; if a companion is unsure, ask the venue directly instead of assuming that an indoor activity is risk-free.
