Rye bread, lake fish and hot soup at the Fontana restaurant make the lakeside location useful after the soak, because dinner does not require another drive. Give the spa at least two hours if you are passing through; admission, changing and the bread visit can easily push a tightly timed Golden Circle day later than expected.
Cave tours and lake time are separate bookings
Laugarvatn Adventure runs cave activities year-round, with guaranteed daily departures from June to August. On a summer self-drive route, that is a proper half-day, not a filler between Geysir and Gullfoss. Add meeting time, equipment and the return journey before booking Fontana; the two addresses are close, but the schedules are not interchangeable.
For a quieter gap, walk beside the lake or fish for Arctic char between April and September. You still need the right licence and gear, and wind can cancel the outdoor plan without warning. Rain is a good reason to use the village pool or café while leaving the main Golden Circle order untouched.
Events can turn a quiet base into a busy one
Gullspretturinn is an 8.5-kilometre race around Laugarvatn Lake, starting at 11:00 on June 13, 2026, with a limit of 350 participants. Geothermal bread and lake fish are served afterwards. On that date, parking, rooms and dinner will be harder to improvise; runners and spectators have a concrete reason to stay.
Lionsþing 2026 takes place in Laugarvatn at the end of May, while June to August may bring lakeside markets, cave tours and small sports events. Check the event pages for the dates that apply to your trip. If nothing lines up, Fontana and the early Þingvellir position are enough reasons to use the village without forcing a festival into the plan.
The drive looks short on a map, but the order matters. From Reykjavik via Þingvellir, Laugarvatn is about an hour away; going to Selfoss first adds a southern loop before you turn back. Self-drivers can sleep by the lake, visit Þingvellir the next morning and continue towards Geysir and Gullfoss. Without a car, confirm that your Golden Circle tour includes a transfer to Laugarvatn before treating its map position as a time saving.

Digging the loaf from the ground, tasting it and following the guide happen at set times, while bathing is a separate kind of stop. If the bread is your reason for coming, check the day’s places and meeting time before adding the lagoon; if you have booked the baths, leave room for showering, changing and lunch. Prices, age rules and availability should be checked for your date.
The timing helps shape a Golden Circle day. Laugarvatn sits between Þingvellir and Geysir or Gullfoss, so lunch, the bread experience or a soak can take one middle slot instead of arriving after the activities have closed. If you still need to reach Flúðir or Selfoss for check-in, choose one timed activity. An overnight in the village gives you more room to separate the lake walk from Fontana.

If road delays are possible, know whether you can move the bread tour or keep only one part of the booking. A drive to the next base also needs time for changing and dinner, not only time in the water.
Choose Laugarvatn for the morning, not for convenience shopping
A Fontana booking, a bread tour or a cave activity gives the overnight a purpose. If your schedule is open and you want reliable groceries or a late dinner, Selfoss is the easier base. The June race is the main date that changes that calculation.
