A shorter morning at Skaftafell is the real gain

The value of Skaftafell National Park usually lies in its trails and glacier activities. When you set out early, the distance between your base and the meeting point directly impacts your breakfast, gear prep, and parking time. Hotel Skaftafell sits in Freysnes, near the park entrance, making it ideal for ending a long drive in Öræfi the night before and saving your energy for Svartifoss or Skaftafellsjökull the next day.

If you're driving east from Vík, staying here prevents the "finish the black sand beach, then keep driving" scenario from spilling into the night. Conversely, if you've booked the earliest Jökulsárlón iceboat or ice cave slot, a base near Jökulsárlón is more direct. And if your next day heads to the East Fjords, Höfn's services and fuel options become the better investment.

Choose the room by space and bed type, not the view you imagine

Both directions work; the key is not to cram lake viewing, hiking, and activity check-ins into the same morning.

Three situations where the base stops working

The first is interpreting "close to the national park" as close to all activities. Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón are different stops, and activity providers' meeting points won't automatically be the same just because the hotel names sound similar. The second is looking only at the nightly rate and forgetting dinner, fuel, and backtracking; a cheap room in a remote location can recoup the difference in food and time.

The third is copying a summer itinerary into winter. The national park is accessible year-round, but road conditions and daylight change which trails are walkable.
